Hi!

I'm almost done with my AACOMAS app and just wanted to see what y'all thought of my school choices. My stats are 3.5 sGPA, 3.6 cGPA, 27 MCAT (10B/10V/7P). I have about 200 hrs community service, tons of clinical care experience, about 60 hrs shadowing (MD only, I've been unable to shadow a DO), no research, I'm URM if that makes any difference for DO schools (does it?). Because of money issues, I can only apply to 10 schools max, I know this is a small number but I also applied to 10 MD. I live in Maryland.

List:

CCOM
DMU
KCUMB
LMU
NYITCOM
Nova
PCOM
Rowan
UNECOM
VCOM

I tried to eliminate any schools with regional bias that I knew of, any that required DO letters, some of the ones that were too new to tell if they're good or not, based on my stats. Suggestions for additions, changes, or any other pertinent info I should know are welcome.

Thanks ahead of time. 🙂

Remove UNECOM and CCOM and replace with WesternCOMP and LECOM. Though LECOME requires a DO letter they will do whatever it takes for you to meet those requirements (aka have a DO from their school write you one during the interview)

Do CCOM and UNECOM have IS bias? If LECOM does that then I'll apply there too. Thank you!

UNECOM does. As long as you have a legit reason for going and STAYING in NE then you have a fighting chance 🙂

LECOM doesn't have IS bias because they are a private institution!

No problem and good luck!

Ok, yeah I'm removing UNECOM then lol Just curious what is wrong with CCOM?

Haha well New England is a beautiful place so I would think about it!

Nothing is wrong with CCOM but just taking from some of the wisdom from the amazing faculty on here is that CCOM is very stats focused, they have an average of a 29 MCAT so it's just that you might be wasting money applying there. They seem to send almost everyone a secondary and then screen out pretty hard post-secondary.

IMHO I still applied to CCOM and keep getting emails from them to apply haha. It's all dependent on if you have the spare cash to burn through and risk if you decide to apply there.

I'd say you have a better shot at an interview for Alabama COM (ACOM) and/or PCOM-GA campus.

let me know if this helps!

Hmm that is good to think about. I've heard good things about that school so that's why I put it on my list but that's definitely something to think about. Is the OOS tuition ridiculous?

I've never been to Maine and I do NOT enjoy cold weather (I have a skin condition that worsens with the cold and lack of humidity) so that's why I'm not really sure anymore, especially if they have regional bias. I'll probably have to visit before I can really make a decision. This goes for a couple other schools btw cuz I know they can have crazy winters too lol

If I apply to PCOM don't they actually choose the campus for you? Like isn't PCOM-GA still the same thing? Alabama is a little too political and conservative for my taste, while I have no problem working in rural areas they just seem a little coo-coo haha

OOS tuition is the same as IS tuition (54,264 annually via AACOMAS CIB).

I have only heard a few terms associated to New England: cold, clam chowder, and the Patriots.

I'm pretty sure PCOM has two separate applications, one for the GA campus and PCOM. You must submit two separate applications.

Haha hey better to be honest than to work there and "suffer" from the coo-coo. I think for me, though raised in a particularly conservative area, I enjoy working with populations who have completely different beliefs, guess I'm flexible with diversity in that way.

Hope this helps!

I love clam chowder but not enough for that cold weather lol oh ok, then yes I'll be sure to add PCOM-GA too.

I have no problem working with a diverse group, being URM I'm always working with ppl different than myself both in school and jobs (unless if I was doing community service) but they're just too pushy with their beliefs so that's why I'd be really iffy about applying there lol although that southern hospitality is mighty tempting haha

Anyway, thanks a lot for you help and good luck to you with your apps 🙂

I'm really only eyeing ACOM for being near Nawlins. I love jambalaya!

Thank you and good luck with you as well!

If you don't like the cold, I wouldn't add LECOM-E! Erie was in the top 5 snowiest cities last winter. Otherwise looks good and very similar to my list 🙂

Is ACOM really that close to New Orleans?
Would bump it up my list if so, but from what I can tell, it's still about 6 hours away?

It's about 5 hours via a Google search.

From being from CA, 5 hours is doable compared to 2 days!
Gotcha. I thought it might be a relative distance thing. Being in Texas, I'm already pretty close. Lots of neat places near Dothan though. Although there are some pretty rough things about being in the deep south, there is a cultural component there that would be very hard to find elsewhere.

Sorry to hijack OP. I'd offer some feedback, but I'm still just a slightly below average applicant. All the best to you!

Lol it's cool. Thank you, same to you! If the admissions game was all numbers I'd still be screwed lol 😉

Don't sell yourself too short. you're basically above the national average MATRICULATED in every category, and probably for most schools as well. Sounds like you've got some good extra curriculars also.
