Looking at the article the individual is in the UK, and socialized health care isn't as great as Mike Moore likes to think. I also don't know how rural Beverley, East Yorkshire is but I would be willing to bet there are places in the rural US where, to a lesser extent, things like this occur. Last I know that individuals may think being a veteran of the US automatically results in entitlement to health care forever but that is not the case. For a member to be eligible for the biggest socialized health organization in the US generally they would need to be in the military, put in 20+ years of military service or meet criteria listed by the Dept of VA (generally its have a condition that started while in service or stemmed from something that happened while in service).
