I was browsing through this website called fatwallet.com It's a forum about deals and such. I came across this discussion and I have posted the link.

What do you guys think about this? It seems like people responding to that thread think that OD's are just ripping people off. I mean, there was this one guy on it that said he's been wearing the same prescription for 5 years! Also, with all these contact lenses companies out there and so still order the lenses for the customers even if doctor's don't sign off of them. What do you think is the future of optometry and with the way all everything can be bought online.

Just wanted your guys' input. I know that it still hasn't changed my mind of still pursuing optometry school.

Thanks

i love fatwallet, they save me a lot of money and offer good advice (100 bucks to sign up for a credit card!)

i frequent that site a lot, dont worry about them bashing opts, they bash everyone. pretty much they are cheap (i definetely consider myself a fatwalleter). they bash Dell for charging like 20 dollar shipping on a computer with a 19 inch monitor! if its not FAR (free after rebate) they will complain.

opt is more then selling contacts, its the care. we want people to come to us for checkups and followups, if they want to buy contacts elsewhere, fine by me. if they do not excercise caution and ruin thier eyes (by wearing the same perscription for five years) it simply means more money for optometrists ^^

People will do anything to save a buck...I have a Keratoconus patient who swears that for the last couple of years he has been fit by an Optician for contacts. He doesn't think it's necessary to get a corneal topography done and says it's a waste of money! He thinks I can just pull out any old lens and slap it on his eyes and he'll see perfectly....so much for patient education ......All I know is........I love to cut corners and save a couple bucks too but not when it comes to my health!
