Yep. I was enjoying myself until last month or so. Read my, "Step 3 ruins internship" thread for more info.

Otherwise, it's going. I find myself to be bored sometimes. Now that I have actually finished medical school and received the degree, sometimes I sit around thinking, "Ok, now what?"

I'm loving internship year. Never thought it would be this fun. All my older pediatric friends led me to believe that intern year was equivalent to a hurricane bashing your house on a daily basis.

Intern year here is pretty benign too. There are a couple of brutal off-service months just to remind you that you picked the right specialty, but life is good on the psych rotations. 🙂

6 months have flown by here. Happy to be done with off service rotations. Settling into psych.

It's going OK. I'm finally back on psych after being off-service for 3 months (we alternate psych and non-psych in 3 month blocks). Being off service didn't make me want to switch into neuro or IM, but getting back to psych is a little hard because interns have so much more responsibility on psych rotations here than they do on other services. I kinda got used to sharing my patients with a 2nd or 3rd year resident, and now it's just me and the attending again.

It definitely beats being a 3rd year med student, though.

Maybe it is me, but I prefer to have more responsibility. When you have faculty monitoring your every move and adjusting useless things (like "you should use paxil instead of celexa" when there is no medical data to support it), there is little reason to think very hard. When I have little responsibility, I don't try to be a better doctor because my efforts will rarely be taken seriously.

My last rotation had minimal faculty interaction, and I was double checking everything. He monitored everything I did, but he didn't change or imply I needed to change a single thing. It boosted my confidence, and I made every effort to be perfect (if there is such a thing). If I wasn't sure, I found the data to back up my choices. I'd prefer most months to go just like this one.

I'm finally on psych and absolutely loving it, after spending the first 6 months doing everything else. The hours are great, and we have a lot of responsibility, especially while on call.
