Just a quick question. I am having trouble deciding on what classes I should take next semester. I'm done with general bio, physics, all my general ed classes (English, math, etc.) I just finished Chem 1 and need to get cell bio, Chem 2 and both organic chemistry courses done as soon as Possible. Unfortunately summer semester isn't an option. So my question is, would it be extremely difficult to take Chem 2 and organic 1 at the same time? I am used to taking a lot of science credits and get pretty good grades. But just don't know if it would be a little overwhelming. Has anyone done this? Any advice would be appreciated!

Thanks

Will your school let you take Organic I before you complete Chemistry I & II?

I have seen someone do this, they did fine, but they were brilliant. It will be no walk in the park, if you have been doing great in your science classes ( 3.5 or above), then I think you will be fine. Main problem: check to see if your school allows this, many schools frown upon it, obviously, but some schools may kick you out of the class(orgo2) seeing that you haven't taken orgo 1.

Having a full year of chem under your belt will make Organic a lot easier so I wouldn't advise taking them both at the same time. Most school make chem 1 and 2 pre reqs for organic for this reason.

I talked to a counselor, and they will let me take it at the same time. I have 3.7 overall and have done pretty well in science
Courses thus far. The main reason I want to take it is because I'm a little bit older then the average applicant and want to finish the pre reqs as soon a possible. My options are as follows.

Option 1: take Chem 2, Orgo 1, cell bio and 1 elective/fine art credit next semester. Then for spring take Orgo 2, a couple upper level bio courses, and hopefully research. And take DAT in the summer.

Option 2: take Chem 2, cell bio, anatomy, and an elective in the fall.
In the spring take Orgo 1, upper level bio classes and another class or two (depending on how many credit hours that gives me. I will be above 15 credits) this would force me to take Orgo 2 next summer, which is when i would like to take the dat and devote most of my time to study for it.

I just feel a little lost. I want to use my time the best I can. I'm married, I work, and quite Frankly i just want to get in to dental school as soon as possible. I'm 23 yrs Old, and want to get on with my life.

It is the department head/chairman who usually makes decisions on special request rather than a counselor. Gosh at 23, if you wait another year, by the time you get out of dental school you will be eligible for social security, assuming there will still be any left.

So in other words, Waiting another year really won't be that big of deal? Is that what you're saying doc?

I don't think it will be that bad. They may even compliment each other fairly well since you already have gen chem 1 under your belt. However, I don't think I have ever heard of someone taking gen chem and orgo concurrently, but if you absolutely must take them next semester than try it and see what happens. You can always drop if it is too much.

"difficulty" is a relative term. Some professors are very hard and can turn any science course into a nightmare experience... Some students just perceive classes like GC and Orgo hard because they don't prepare properly... some students have had GC and some Orgo in high school and when they enter these college courses, they breeze through them and say "theyr easy"....

Its hard to answer this question because everyone has difference experiences. GENERALLY THO, those 2 classes require a good bit of studying, keep up everyday with new material and DON'T WAIT FOR THE WEEKEND before the exam to start studying :nono: If you have good studying patterns, you'll do fine is my opinion.

Chem 2 and Orgo 2 are two very different classes....you won't need chem 2 for orgo 2....I think it is definitely do-able...just make sure your other two classes are very easy!

I agree with dentalworks... I think you'll be fine.. just read above the class/teacher.. and manage your time wisely and it should be simple.

Option 2, would hurt your chances on the organic section of the DAT. Orgo 2 is heavily tested in that section.

In my opinion, it is manageable as I took Orgo I and Chem II at the sametime on top of human physio and genetics. I am not sure how much time you can dedicate to studying but if you can then you should definitely do it.

I was in the same situation. I wanted to get it done as soon as possible (I am 26) so I can apply this cycle. The application cycle opens probably around early June and you should take the DAT before the application cycle opens up.

I feel like the class of chem II and Ochem I is totally different ball game and what you learn in Chem II is not necessary essential because the materials that do overlap can be self studied in Ochem I. BUT MAKE SURE TO TAKE TIME TO STUDY FOR BOTH CLASSES.

Good luck

I'm in the same boat in a way(just way older ( : ). I want to take Orgo 2 before my DAT next summer. I am taking Chem 2 fall, Orgo 1 spring and Orgo 2 summer session that will end in July. I will take the DAT in August.
My chem 1 professor said taking orgy 2 in the summer will be fine, it's lot's of memorization.....I think it will be good right before the DAT.
