Hi all,

I'm going to begin a formal post-bacc program this summer. Before starting my Chemisty and Physics pre-reqs, I would like to do some studying on my own. Could anyone suggest some good "brush-up" text books?

Thanks in advance.

Yes. I did what you are going to do. I went out to the bookstore and purchased Chemistry for Dummies. They have a whole line of "for dummies" books and they are great. Laid out in easier to understand terms than a textbook because they are designed for self-teaching, unlike most texts. There are also "the complete idiot's guide..." and other knock-off brands. They all seem to be about the same as far as quality. Check them out.

I like just working my way through topics in EK's 1001 questions in Chem & Physics. They're laid out so that you really don't have to really read the text. It's a learn by doing approach. 👍 They start each topic with very easy questions. As you get struck read the answer explaination.

If you've never taken these courses before you don't want to go out and buy a text book and then find out your class is using a different text book. I found most "dummy" books to be too elementory if you're serious about the sciences and I would not do the EK books until AFTER you have taken these classes and begin studying for the MCAT because they are "review" books that highlight concepts but are truely meant for those who have already taken the courses.

I would suggest looking at the schaum's outline books. They are very in depth and teach to all levels. I used these the summer before I entered HES and they were very handy. There are others like schaum's and you can view them in the library or bookstore, but I found them to be the most complete for those who want a good review.

Go to the chem department and physics department and ask if they know what books will be used.

If you decided to do home study for MCAT prep you can buy those materials now and review them before and during classes
