Chem Calculations

Hi guys...I've been going through all the practice tests from Kaplan, Barron's and Cliff's and noticed that there were quite a few general chem calculations..From what I have read on the forums, there is only a couple calculations on the PCAT (in the chemistry section)..Is anybody else spending a lot of time on calculations or just concepts?? Thanks!

I think there are at least 10 calculation questions. Be prepared!

uh...NO - but I like how you continue to spread misinformation every time you post.

more like maybe 5 gen chem q's that require calc's...maybe.

remember that there are only 24 gen chem q's (and 24 ochem q's), and they will only count 20 genchem + 20 ochem for your chem score (8 q's are sample q's that harcourt is researching to see if they will actually score in future exams).

you need to focus more on concepts of chem, like orbitals, etc...not calculations.

Do you mean orbitals are important for Organic Chem？I really read a few chapters in OChem book. I'm really concerned.

No calculation at all. Most of them are just pluged in formulas. (e.g. Gas formula) You can know the answers right away. Concepts in ochem 1 (sn1,sn2) are more important.

Orbitals are definitely important to O.Chem, but aren't necessarily going to show up on the PCAT. I think it's a fair question though because they are quick questions to answer.

There are a few calculation questions, but very simple. The review books give you problems with a lot harder calculations than you will find on the PCAT.

There are at least 5 to 10 calculation questions. I took it on Aug. Who knows they will throw some calculation questions at this time. I just want to alert them. Study everything. Are you sure that they will put just conceptual questions at this time? So, do not ever say I misleading or something because you do not know exactly how the test is going.

At this time, we have more calculation questions than in AUG. They change a lot in Chemistry section. That is what i predicted before the test. Chemistry section on the Aug test was so easy that everyone scored highly on that section, so they make this harder on the Oct test. However, biology seems to be easier than the last one. Mathematic section stays the same.

i dunno if there was more calc chem Q this time or last time,

but i thought that there were only 2 that really required you to calculate the moles and stuff for 30-40 sec

the rest of the calculation (around 5 more) were pretty rudimentary and could be done in the head

Please...stop your weak attempts at validating your previous weak statements.

There were very FEW inorg calcs that required anything more than basic ADDITION and MULTIPLICATION. Only 3-4 that required more than a minute of calculations.

what are you guy talking about...???? this time, let me see 1, 2, 3, 4,...slightly 5 questions need calculation... I remember every single questions lol cuz I have 10 minutes extra time to go over again since a lot questions I did last August (last tim 95% dont know why this low)

Here is the reason why they have many inorganic questions at this time: a lot of people thought there would be many organic questions on the Oct. Pcat hartcourt is smart enough to change the test, so fewer people will do well on the chemistry section. They do not want everyone score highly on the test, so they have to retake the Pcat. The best way to pass the test is to study everything.😀

How can you claim to know any of this? You took the PCAT twice; you won't even receive your scores for the most recent test for another month. You haven't interviewed anywhere yet, you certainly haven't been accepted anywhere yet, and this is only your first year of applying. On top of all that, you admitted in a different thread that you did very poorly on the parts of the test that require a high level of skill in English.

It is grossly irresponsible for you to make statements implying that you know more than you really do. And since you probably don't work for Harcourt, you probably don't write tests for Harcourt, and you're not sitting on an adcom, you're really in no position to make statements for those entities.

I suggest you qualify your statements with your level of experience, so that people don't get the wrong idea.

lets all try to remember that there are various forms of the test (10+) so however many chem calc question one gets on a test is not reflective on how many chem calc question in another person's test

the range is around 5-10

Do they use the same questions in each form, which are mixed up or does each form have different questions?

Edit: I see there are different questions in different forms. hmmmmm answered my question, sorry for not reading your post clearly. I guess that explains my very poor reading comp score from the last test. 😳
