Buret, pipet, volumetric flask...when do you use what?

Think destroyer said pipet for odd volumes, buret is 2nd most accurate, not sure about volumetric flask. Erlenmeyer flask is for shaking though

Buret, pipet, volumetric flask...when do you use what?

You use Buret, if you need to measure out volumes of 5-50 ml. If you need to measure volumes of 1 ml or less, or volumes like 5.25 ml, you use a pipet.
Volumetric flask is usually for volumes of 50ml and up. For example 50 ml or 100ml or 250ml you would use a volumetric flask.

Someone posted a question in the DAT destroyer thread that I am curious about too. I think what I typed earlier was incorrect (might have mixed pipet and buret up)..

Destroyer'14, I'm confused on when to use a pipet and when to use a buret.
In the Ochem section Q.201, to measure 15.6 ml of liquid the answer is to use a pipet. However, in Gchem section Q.206 to measure 12.3 ml of solution we use a buret?
What's the difference here?

A 25ml Volumetric pipet has an accuracy of up to 0.01ml , while a 25ml Buret has an accuracy of up to 0.1ml. People make assumptions and sometimes use Burets to approximate volumes like 15.65ml, but that is not an accurate measurement.

In the Destroyer question, volume of 12.3 ml can be measured using pipette or a buret. However, pipet was not among the choices, so the best answer was Buret.

Transfer pipet cannot be used to measure volumes, it is simply used to transfer small volumes.
