Chem ,Physics and Physiology in one semester
Does this sound like it would be too much for one semester? All high level courses.

I took physics, chem,and o-chem in one semester and did very well. If the three courses are the only things you will need to concentrate on then go ahead and do it. If you have to take additional gen-eds or something then I would really reconsider trying such a heavy load, but then again anythings possible if you want it bad enough.

Doable but crazy in my opinion. Why would you ever want to torture yourself like that? I was a bio major in college and never had to take more than 2 upper level science classes in 1 semester. I spread them out.... The hardest combo was orgo/bio.

I have no more Gen-ed that I need.I kinda have no choice , BUT I could always take a Ethics class or something to fill in the credit space. I just wasn't sure how hard higher level classes may be.

I took Vertebrate Physiology, Biochemistry, and Physics III last Fall. It was definitely doable, but I didn't really get any volunteer time in. It was a great prep semester for the MCAT.

I took stats, embryology (+ lab), and physics. And worked 30hrs a week. That was my worst semester. It's not so bad if you have the time to focus soley on school.

I think it's doable. I took o-chem, calculus, bio, and Spanish in one quarter ... it wasn't the most fun quarter, but I survived.

Next year I will be in a similar boat. Biochemistry, Microbio, and physics in the same semester. This fall won't be too bad: O-chem and physio. Good luck to you!

Yadda, yadda, yadda. My internet penis is __________________________________________________________________________________________________ that big. And I grew that penis working 80 hours a week, taking advanced organic chemistry, quantum mechanics,linear algebra, and P-chem. I was also serving as a food tester for the president, singing to 3rd world children, and volunteering at a free clinic.

Don't take that schedule if you are already questioning yourself if you can do it, if you go hit by an extra tough professor(or two!) you'll be in deep, maybe having to drop.

You will be fine. People have taken way nastier semesters and survived (and survived being A's). My worst quarter was 4 upper division science classes plus a lab and work and I made it out ok. You just have to realize what you are getting yourself into ahead of time and you should be fine.

I'd modify that and say I would do it if I knew that all the teachers weren't difficult. When I took my combo I knew that the Vert. Phys class was the most difficult biology class offered because of the prof. But I also knew Biochem would be easy because the prof actually hands out a study guide.

I think it has nothing to do with the instructor. These are all classes that you need for your future if you're a premed. So the profs easy or not, you still have to learn them well. Do it only if you don't have too many distractions. Having a tough load isn't actually bad, it makes people more productive and focused, but if you've got any distractions lined up, then don't do it.

I agree I think I will just do it. I have gotten nothing under a A/B+ in my pre-meds so I'm sure Ill be fine. I have heard horror stories of O-Chem. Then again I heard horror stories of pre-med classes in general and I have pulled through with flying colors so Iam gonna do it. Thanks for the advice everyone!

During my freshman year at Cornell, I took Physics, Chem (intro not orgo), Biology, Differential Equations, and English and got a 3.9+ GPA. It's doable but you won't have much free time. Weekends will become more time to study rather than a break.

As the other posters said, it's definitely doable, you just have to be realistic about the time commitment. I'm a post-bacc so I took physics, ochem, bio and anatomy/physiology (all lab classes, upper division etc.) at the same time for two semesters in a row, plus research and working part time AND prepping for the MCAT. I didn't really have a choice, since I want to go to med school next year and had all the pre-reqs to complete...but it was NOT fun. There were definitely times that I didn't have time to do laundry or go grocery shopping, let alone seeing family or friends. So just be prepared. I'm sure you can do it academically, but do you want to have that kind of a semester?

JennaK - I think it's a risk/reward thing. You had asked before about how to overcome a poor GPA. Taking a heavy load and succeeding (as I'm sure you're capable of) will be very convicing. On the other hand, if you're not as successful, it just adds to your problems. But I think you need to move ahead confidently.

FWIW, I took organic and physics with labs all last year with my 50 hour a week job and two children. So, obviously, it can be done.

Everyone seems to handle impressive loads well . I'am sure I will be fine. I don't work ,but I have a 13 year old and a 5 year old. BOTH in school full time now and that gives me a lot of time for school. By the time their karate classes are over with my husbands home and I lock myself away in the office. I don't think a semester ago it would have been possible with my little one home, but I'am going to give it a go. I agree it would look impressive to show not only that I have maintained a 3.75 GPA the last few years, but that I can maintain it with a heavy load. I don't party or such so little time for other things doesn't matter too much. I will have to just tell the family to except how it will be in the long run anyway with medical school studies. I really appreciate the input. It is nice to know others have dont it and lived to tell 🙂

i have organic chem I, genetics and comparative anatomy all first semester.
it is going to be awful, but the way the schedules work at my school, i have to take all of the classes together to graduate on time. 🙁

Nah not too much I think. I'm taking orgo, physics, and systems physiology at once [plus calc/eng mech]... I think you can do it as long as long as you devote some time to each subject.. I've seen people with worse schedules do well. You should be fine, just don't think at any point you won't be able to do it, or else you'll get into that mentality and it'll affect your studies.

I think quarters like that can be some of the most fun. I'm taking microbio, physical chem, and biochem (as well as spanish 103, lol) this fall quarter, but I'm genuinely looking forward to it since I know it'll actually be relevant to my future. Take heart!

You can do it, its just gonna suuuuck. I took Ochem, Cell Bio, Calc II, and 2 gen-eds...its do-able, but that was my hardest semester.

next semester.

I will also be working, tutoring, and yada yada, but taking research off the following semester since I hope to be getting interviews

I think it probably depends on what your major is, what your strengths and weaknesses are. For someone who is more scientifically inclined, it probably wouldn't be too big of a deal.

With that being said, it also goes the same the other way. The typical science major would probably freak out if they had all comparative lit, philosophy, writing courses.... Well, unless they are the 45T Hopkins genius whiz kids anyway.
