  1. Pre-Medical
Hey all,

I'm looking for advice on my chem prerequisites. So, I am a freshmen (technically, credit wise I am a sophomore) at Purdue University. I am taking the basic science classes for a major in Genetics. I tested into an accelerated chemistry course called Chemistry 129. It is a 5 credit course that encompasses 2 standard chemistry courses (chemistry 1 and 2) with a lab, and because I'm taking this accelerated chemistry course, I will be taking Organic Chemistry 1 next semester.

So what I am worried about is the fact that all of the medical schools that I am planning on applying to require 2 semesters of general chemistry with lab. Should I start the process of verifying that my chem class is a good substitute now or should I wait until closer to applying? If I have to take another general chemistry course, I'd rather do it sooner rather than later. But taking another general chemistry course is kind of pointless because this class encompasses both of the general chem courses (chem 115 and 116) that Purdue offers. This class was built specifically for biology and pre-pharmacy students as a route to get into O Chem second semester of freshmen year.

Thanks in advance.

I would contact some schools you're interested in applying to and ask them how they handle situations like yours. If you do have to take a second gen chem, it might not be a bad idea to consider taking it later on. That could be a great opportunity to double dip: get your 2nd gen chem requirement AND study for the MCAT. It'll help you refresh on the gen chem info that you may have forgotten.

I hope that's helpful!

You should ask around and actually request a copy of your transcript. Sometimes even if you test into the class, it will say "AP credit awarded" in that area. So if you were awarded AP credit, then it becomes a little different because the course requirements become less strict. Further, many schools likely would also be okay with you taking an upper-level chemistry course in lieu of general chemistry if it comes down to it - just ask.

I was actually facing this same problem and emailed a bunch (~20) of schools about it, and the majority (except like 1 or 2) said that they would count the accelerated gen chem course as fulfilling the pre-req requirement! This was even if their website states "2 semesters of general chemistry". I would suggest also emailing/calling schools once you have an idea of where you want to apply.

I was in a similar situation and different schools had different answers.

most schools seemed fine with it as long as I could provide documentation from the school or school's website directly collaborating my claim. others required I take another few credits as long as I completed them before matriculation (it most likely won't affect their considering you for interviews).
