Hello,

I was planning to take two chemistry courses this winter and summer to meet the med school admissions requirements

Each course offers 3 hrs of leture/week, 1 hr of tutorial/week and one 3 hr lab every other week. Will these courses meet the admissions requirements at most schools.

I have noticed that at many schools chemistry lectures and labs are treated as seperate courses, so they recieve a grade for each of these. Since the chem course and labs at the school I will be attending are offered as one course with a lab component will med schools know that the lab was even a part of the course, or will they be looking for labs as a seperate course. Also does it matter that labe are only every second week, or should I be looking for courses that have a weekly lab component.

Thanks for any help.

It sounds like your Chemistry courses will meet the requirements for medical school. General Chemistry for medical school is usually a four or five hour course per semester. (My undergraduate General Chemistry course was a five hour course that included two labs per week). If your credit hour totals are four or five hours per semester, it is assumed that the lab is included.

The credit hours are only 3 per week since the labs are every other week. Is there some way of ensuring that they know that a lab was included?

A three-credit class might not be enough. Call some of the schools that interest you and get their opinions before you spend the tuition dollars. Good luck!!🙂

Hi,

I forgot to mention that the course I will be taking is at a Canadian University. It seems most Canadian schools don't use the same credit hour system that US schools use. We get 3 credits for a 1 semester course and 6 credits for a full year course (some schools use a 0.5 and 1.0 credit system), treating both, courses with and without labs the same. Namely, lab or not lab a 1 semester course is worth 3 credits. I consulted the AMCAS manual and it seems in order for AMCAS to convert the 3.0 credit system to a 4.0 credit hour (thus reflecting the lab component) I need to include a letter from the registrars office explaining that the course had a lab component. AMCAS will then make the proper conversion.

I'm pretty sure about this, but is there anyone else that can confirm or deny this?
