Hello,

I found this forum by doing a google search for "MPH MSPH forum", and it looks like a good forum for me to ask a question.

I am currently working in the chemistry department as a Bioinformatics Analyst at Emory University. I am thinking of changing my direction to have a MSPH in Public Health Informatics degree.

First of all I want to give information about myself. My plan is to apply for the Fall 2009 semester. I have a Bachelor of Science degree (chemistry) from Turkey and I received my Master of Science degree in chemistry at Emory. I am not a US citizen, but I am in the process of gaining a permanent resident status in the summer of 2008.

I am doing a computational chemistry which includes 3-D protein-drug interaction modeling and data-mining. Unfortunately, the job opportunities are limited. That's why I wanted to take a look at MSPH degrees.

My questions are:

1) How is the job outlook if I have a MSPH degree in Public Health Informatics

2) Are applications really competitive?

I took GRE exam 7 years ago for the grad school. Back then my scores were Quantitative: 750, Qualitative: 770, Verbal: 310

I believe I can get similar scores again with improved Verbal score since I have been in the US for more than 6 years now 🙂

Thanks,

Your GRE score has great potential as long as you can raise that verbal score. I'm not really familiar with public health informatics, but intuitively, I would think informatics would be more in demand than chemistry. Since you're already at Emory, have you spoken with their public health dept?

I talked to them and they say my application will be considered same as any other application. However, I can get really good reference letters from my advisor who brought $500 million to the university couple of years ago (He sold an AIDS drug to pharma)

I believe I will get accepted as long as I can get my documents together and send it 🙂

Public Health Informatics has definitely has more job opportunities than computational chemistry.

Emory Public Health is having a recruitment day today. I will have lots of questions for them 🙂
