Chicago Area Programs

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
i just got an interview from cook county as well. i know ZIP about the program. i got one from univ of chicago as well and all i know is that it (being univ of chicago) has a "good" reputation. another poster under the interviews thread wrote about her interview experience there and said it was rather malignant. i have NO idea. this can be so frustrating not being able to find things out about programs...much different than applying for med school! 😉

Yeah -- too bad the search function is disabled right now!
But, I remember that poster who posted a while back about Univ of Chicago programs & swtiching from OBGYN to anesthesiology. I remember her posting something to the effect of stay away from obgyn in chicago. we'll. tha'ts just memory. if this search function comes back on we can look for the posts. I also pm'ed her at the time.
My advisor also warned me about univ of chicago -- she said it is a great school w/ great rep (she actually went there for med school) but she said the obgyn program has been rumored to be more malignant in the past few years.
(i'm talking about univ of chicago programs )

I have an interview scheduled there. but it is on my long list of conflicting dates. so I am looking for a good excuse to cancel as well. but the bad thing is -- I like the location -- chicago -- and it is close to some family!

anyone who is actually there reading these forums??

I also have interviews scheduled at Univ Chicago and Univ Illinois- Chicago. I've heard UC is malignant and the hospital at UIC is old and dirty but the faculty and residents are good. That's about all I know. Anyone know anything about Northwestern? I'm hoping to schedule an interview there.

Before you consider Cook take a look at a book called _Hospital_ written by Sydney Lewis. It's about Cook County hospital. In many ways I think the book is quite accurate but it downplays some of the more malignant aspects of the hospital which I am personally familiar with. I wouldn't be happy doing a residency at Cook (now called Stroger) regardless of the specialty with the possible exception of EM.

The docs on the tv show "ER" based at Cook can seem malignant at times...
I wonder if fiction reflects reality... 🙂

The book I recommended isn't fictional. It's just a series of interviews with about 100 people at Cook -- 90% of them being physicians. I believe some Ob/Gyns may have been interviewed.
