I have lived in Chicago most of my life... so I am currently a resident in IL. However I have lived in Maryland the past 2 years., and have the option of getting a license here.. etc. hence changing my residency to Maryland.

Generally, do the state school in Maryland/Illinois have a high preference for in state.. or I suppose more than usual? Does anyone have any recommendations? I am applying to med school this June, most likely.

If you are a student in Maryland , you had better check whether being a student counts as residency for the state medical school (I don't know the rules in Maryland but in Massachusetts, years spent as a student don't count toward residency for admission/tuition purposes).

There are more med schools in IL although SIU may not be open to you if you are from the northern portion of the state (preference given to downstate applicants).

Best money you'll spend to answer all your questions is the MSAR. You'll be able to see instate/OOS preferences for each school.

Currently working as a biologist so not a student. Thank you for the input!

Maryland is among the worst states for IS acceptance. Only 157 of their 1163 applicants matriculate IS. That's 13.5%. That's even worse than CA (14.7%).
IL applicants fare much better at 24.9%.

Wow I didn't know it was that bad for us IS in Maryland. Makes my rejection sting a little less.
