Chief helpful for fellowship applications?

How much would being Chief Resident help in fellowship (NICU) application?

I generally don't think it is worth an extra year either in terms of the application process OR the extra knowledge for future neonatologists to do a chief year. Others certainly have a different view on this. It's undoubtedly true that the skills in making schedules, finding emergency coverage and generally fighting with everyone will be helpful when you are the chief neonatology fellow or junior academic faculty. Former chief residents have a way of getting assigned scheduling talks!

Programs in which the PL-3's are chiefs without an extra year might be more reasonable to be a chief at, but then again, it seems like a lot of work for little benefit.

Of course, the very fact of being SELECTED as a chief implies that you are thought well of, and that matters a lot!

Regards and don't forget to let me know next yr when you are hitting the interview trail.

Disclaimer: I was not selected as a chief resident and therefore am permanently bitter 😡 . I also did not match at where Cameron is doing his residency (based on his profile) it was my #1 😡 😡 so I'm trying to get even with them by taking away their shining star  .

Thanks for the reply OBP. I have not been offered the spot yet, but my PD has encouraged me to apply. As you outlined, I'm not sure it will be worth the time, but I'm still weighing it all... I am indeed flattered to be considered, we'll have to see how things play out. I'll be sure to keep you updated on where I'm applying for fellowships. It seems like I just applied for residency, now all of these new decisions... 😕
