Question. How did they choose your Chief Resident at your program? I'm at a new program so there are no chiefs, just curious as to how it is usually done at other institutions... voted on by residents/interns? Picked by attendings? que?

Voted on by residents (but rumor has it that the PD had "veto power").

At the UC Davis EM residency the chief does an extra year as a junior faculty member. The position is picked by the PD with input from the faculty.

Its different in surgery - all of our final year residents are Chiefs. No voting. We do have an "Administrative Chief" who is "elected" by the PD (read: forced) to do the schedules, etc.
