i just got a question on kaplan qbank that stated in question that the bacteria was cultured on chocolate agar, then the answer had to do with a n. gonorrhoeae infection... isn't this cultured on thayer martin? can it also be cultured on chocolatE? or is this a mistake?
 
choclate agar is for Nisseria when the culture is from a sterile site. for Thayer Martin the culture is done where other normal flora would be found.

The two are somewhat interchangeable. Chocolate agar is a generic RBC lysate agar giving it the brown color from which it derives its name. Thayer-Martin, a chocolate agar, was developed to specifically isolate Neisseria. So as Frankysine suggested Thayer-Martin is for normal flora cultures; inhibit the normal flora while allowing Neisseria species to grow.

Darn. And I was thinking it somehow involved chocolate. 🙁

But, yeah, I have seen that chocolate agar is used for N. gonorrhea and mening in a few different sources. I had never heard of Thayer-Martin -- thanks for the info.
