Hi Everybody, a long-time lurker is stepping out of the shadows!

I will be a non-traditional age 40 when I start my pre-pharmacy path in Fall '07. Based on information gleaned from previous posts, I'm considering getting a Pharm Tech certification so I can be more competitive in finding an "entry level" pharmacy job while in school. I also think this could be a great way to make sure I'm on the right path...

Anyhoo...I'm asking for advice on choosing a program. Are there particular things that I should look for? Is there are risk (like a few trade schools) of an unscrupulous school? BTW, I'll be relocating to Central, PA in a few months.

Any advice is appreciated!

Start out working PT in a pharmacy if you can, most retail chains have prep materials and will pay for you to take the national certification test. Other than that dont spend the money for the classes that are several hundreds to thousands of dollars. There are plenty of books to help you learn it on your own. Here are a few:

Reference Guide for Pharmacy Technician Exam - Manan Shroff
Comprehensive Exam Review for the Pharmacy Technician - Jahangir Moini
Delmar's Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam Review

Thanks for the feedback. As I was researching classes I started getting this "uneasy" feeling that usually preceeds being ripped off. These look like great resources!

Hello,

I just took and passed the PTCE exam in November and recently received my Certified Pharmacy Technician certificate from the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board.

www.ptcb.org

All I used to study from was Noah Reifmans manuals that I have provided a link to below, it was more than enough to knock out the exam!

Now I have a license to learn how to work as a Pharmacy Technician.

My recommendation for working as a Certified Pharmacy Technician is to seek a position as a Volunteer at your local VA hospital, they are a great training facility. I am currently doing this and I am learning a great deal about Pharmacy operations. Of course, they are happy that I took the initiative and got myself certified prior to asking them for a position, I hope this will work out to be a paid position in the near future.

In addition, when the time comes to interview, I am sure that this experience will be looked upon in a very positive light.

Good luck, go for it...

Best Regards,

-Tavit 👍
