Choosing Anesthesiology

when i was told i would easily pull in >350 as an anesthesiologist back in med school... no nursing home admissions, no clinic, no social work, no endless rounding, no BS consults-- i said sign me up! not a single regret and haven't looked back since. now i easily clear >2x 350 living in my city of choice with cases and site coverage expanding each year. at this rate i can comfortably wind down my work hours/call schedule in ten years-- well before i'm 50. btw, i'm barely 5 years out of residency. i don't have blinders on and realize all this may not last and the financial/political circumstances are changing. the future is uncertain for everyone in medicine. which is why i am not running out to buy a condo in hawaii and/or ski cottage in vermont like many of my colleagues. but all in all i have to say anesthesia has been good to me.

i did a regional fellowship and managed to negotiate a year off partnership (3 to 2) with the idea of me getting the rest of the dept up to speed with ultrasound usage and catheter placement. this was when u/s guided blocks were really gaining traction. a fellowship will enhance your value to a group but ultimately it depends on what their individual needs are. many argued a regional fellowship was not necessary but for me it gave me instant credibility with my peers but more importantly the surgeons... as the new guy i was able to say 'well, we did this and that at XYZ nationally recognized hospital, why not try it here?'
