hello all.

any thoughts on whether it matters what upper level bio classes i take? i am attracted to classes in evolution/ecology, but i realize they are a lot less relevant to medicine than the cellular/molecular bio i could take instead. if it matters, i have a marginal gpa (3.4) and a lot of breadth rather than depth in my science-class-taking history.

Well, numerous threads have been done on this. What year are you in the first place, so what classes have you taken? A 3.4 GPA is not bad at all.

And I wouldn't knock evolution biology courses. Those were some of the HARDEST classes I've ever taken. Ever taken a comparative anatomy series? Not just one skeleton, but among several different bloody bleepin' taxa's.. gotta memorize all the similarities and differences amongst the skeletal formations. Be able to calculate the physics of their arrangements.. it's all applicable to the human system as well.

Also evolution through a genetic point of view, the different selection factors and traits working upon population groups, all of which are basically seen here in the US.

Have you taken cell biology and molecular biology courses yet? As well as genetics? Those classes are good introductions to see what they're all about. Virology and Microbiology likewise deal with a lot of cell/molecular. Neuroscience is also very heavy on cell/molecular interactions. Physiology. Cancer biology. A bunch of stuff really..

i'm a postbac. i have taken the general year of basic bio, plus i have a degree in earth + envioronmental sciences so i have done a medium amount of ecology- and plant-oriented bio already. plus human physiology and 1 very specific + obscure cellular bio class. i have lots of units already, so that 3.4 is only nudging upwards.

Take what interests you!!! I personally hated the ecology and plant classes but loved the immunology, micro, bacteriology and virology.

You should take cell biology and physiology to help you prepare for the MCAT if you haven't taken it yet.

I took a comparative anatomy course and it was one of the most difficult courses I have taken so far. However, it was also one of the most interesting, imho.

Take the classes that interest you now because once you get into medical school, there is no choice.
