If I were applying next year - thank God I will not be applying, but if I were - I would have applied to Georgia just for the ring. If you haven?t seen it, there?s an awesome skull on top. When I asked what the story was, the Georgia grad said that long ago medical students were legally allowed to ?rob? graves and a ring with a skull on it distinguished the students from common thieves.:horns: :meanie::horns:

for some reason i find that explanation highly unlikely

If that's true...I'm getting into Harvard Medical School and I'm also marrying a Cosmopolitan model the day after I get the acceptance letter. Other plausible events on this day:
1) It reached sub-zero temperatures in hell.
2) My friend, Elliot, got laid.
3) People on SDN stopped obsessing over whether taking 14 units instead of 15 or 16 might affect their med school chances.
4) Pigs from the farms on the midwest decided to fly...to the east coast.
5) Compton, CA was voted the "safest city in the United States to live in."
6) Michael Jackson actually looks like a human being now...and he's a heterosexual male with a healthy relationship with a beautiful 30 something woman.
7) The Victoria's Secret catalogue decided to put Jarod (from the Subway commercials) on the front cover. He's dressed in a beautiful, silk laced nightgown...with matching underwear and bra.

that just reminds me of that bad movie with that dawsons creek guy...

posh or pacey or something like that.

but anyways...thats kinda cool i guess haha.

it's somewhat credible. digging up graves for studying anatomy was common in the early 20th century. In Scotland, the capture of two gravediggers who were paid by physicians eventually led to body donation programs because things were getting out of control. These gravediggers found this to be such a lucrative business that they'd murder to get physicians their bodies.

Even in the U.S., there were riots due to the gravedigging outrage. A riot at Columbia P&S actually got some of the students killed. There was also a riot over similar reasons at Penn Med, but no one died.

One-liner skepticism is one thing, but . . . . I?m at a loss for words:wow:

Actually the movie was called "The Skulls".

The film was based on the Yale fraternity (?) called "Skulls and Bones" (i think). There is a lot of mysticism going on about it since they are extremely secretive about what they do or who they admit.

Btw G.W Bush belonged to them.

People from Yale or a google search can inform you better on the subject 🙂

The original post was just to share what I had observed and found interesting. I honestly thought the post would just slip into SDN oblivion. To those who replied: thank you for your input.🙂 In response to the expressed interest (er doubt), I decided to go beyond the MCG grad?s explanation, which I still prefer.

The following question was directed to MCG library staff:

?I'm interested to learn why your class ring has a skull on it. If
possible, would you please direct me to supporting documentation? Any
response would be greatly appreciated.?

And the response:

The reason why the skull appears on the class ring might be its
symbolism to anatomy. Please read the recent article on the subject in
the Beeper, MCG newspaper and is found at this site:
http://www.mcg.edu/history/moments/mar07.asp. It is titled
Symbolism of the Skull and Crossbones.

Ever hear of the "graveyard shift"? It derives from when people used to stand gaurd at loved ones graves so that their bodies would not be exhumed.

I think in the early days of medicine, grave robbing did go down- not as many body donation programs to teach us meddies.
