I was wondering if anyone could give me the (brief) scoop on Christiana Care's General Surgery residency in Newark DE. I am an MS-II, but the reason I am asking right now is that my wife just interviewed for their EM residency and really liked it. I am trying to decide between EM and General Surgery, but after spending this summer with Trauma Surgeons at a Level 1 trauma center I think I'm pretty much set on Surgery.
The only info I could find on here (even with searching) is the vague notion that Christiana Care is one of the better "community" programs in the country. I realize this is a vague question, but since their website sucks and I couldn't find other useful info anywhere else (FRIEDA and the ACS weren't eye opening), I figured I'd ask and see what people had to say.
Thanks in advance.

Take this with a grain of salt, because I only know this from an interview and other second hand sources.

It is a very nice hospital with reasonable support and ancillary staff.

Pros: There is a solid trauma experience there, as there are really no competing level one systems in the state of Delaware. I'm talking about to the tune of 3000+ admissions per year. Most of the chiefs I spoke with said that they felt well trained. They have VERY high case numbers compared to a lot of the more standard university programs. Everyone seems very friendly for an east coast program and pretty understanding of personal needs. They have fairly impressive fellowship matches, especially for a community program.

Cons: It's clearly not as metropolitan as some places and the campus itself is a very nice place stuck in the middle of a strip mall jungle. It's still not a University Program, so I'm not sure It would be my top choice as a budding Pediatric Surgeon. Research options are limited. There may also be less autonomy for some parts of the residency compared to the big county academic programs, though they do have 3 months in the chief year where you are given your own service at another hospital and run juniors through cases. I think that probably makes up for this potential deficiency quite a bit.

Overall, I am ranking them quite high on my list. I'm not a budding pediatric surgeon, and I don't need a metropolis. It seems like a very solid place to learn general surgery in a pretty nice environment. I would definitely be happy to go there. As for you, the city is like 45 minutes from Philly and 60 minutes from Baltimore. If you live in between, you could fill an entire rank list with surgery programs in those two cities alone that meet all of the different tiers of quality you would want.

Anyone with better knowledge of the place may feel free to correct any mistakes that I've made.

this is a top academic oriented community program.

If you dont like hardcore academics- then this is THE place for you. The campus is a country club. they get good cases and the staff is cool.

I would put the christiana grads against the hopkinsgrads anyday
