Chromosome condensation in mitosis

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
The form the DNA is in will change depending on what the cell is trying to accomplish. During Interphase for example, the cell machinery needs easy access to the DNA for replication. After replication the DNA condenses down to save space and for protection. The cell machinery no longer needs access to it (until the next round of division when it will un-condense again).
