hi every body ,

i have an exam in pharmacotherapy soon , and i was studying the lower respiratory infections ,,

i have small questions

i get confused between the chronic bronchitis and COPD ..

chronic bronchitis is a component of COPD ..

but while diagnosis how can i differnetiate between patient with chronic bronchitis alone and pateient with (COPD + chronic bronchitis ) .

how can i decied that this patient is having only chronic bronchitis without COPD .

I got bronchitis. Ain't nobody got time for dat.

COPD is a condition defined by airflow limitation. The three subtypes of COPD are chronic bronchitis, emphysema and chronic obstructive asthma. So if someone has chronic bronchitis, by definition, they have COPD. Chronic bronchitis is generally defined as a chronic productive cough for 3+ months out of a year for 2 years. Smokers typically get both chronic bronchitis and emphysema, and a patient can have more than one process going on.

This is how I learned it, COPD is a catch all for, typically smoking related, chronic airflow/exchange problems
