Congrats to everyone who has recently been accepted off of the waitlist!!!

Does anyone know if the Cincy waitlist still moves a lot in July? I'm an in-stater with good stats and extra-curriculars, but unfortunately I was put on hold in Jan and waitlisted in May...

I really want to go to Cincy, but I don't know if there is anything else I can do other than sitting tight and waiting it out. I've been sending in updates to show interest...but I am giving up hope here.

If anyone knows anything about late waitlist movement or has any suggestions, I would appreciate it!

Thanks for your suggestions with the apartments! I'm definitely going to check out Hyde Park. You can let them know you referred me. I'm also gonna look at the Clifton Gas Light neighborhood.

I'm still undecided about whether or not I want to live close to campus. I've never lived more than a 10 minute walk from campus before (including grad school). It'd be pretty cool though to be far enough from school that we can relax on our first 1-2 weeks after test week without being reminded of studying.

I wonder if living close to campus would mean having to hear the blare of ambulance sirens all the time.

Does anyone know if Avondale (near the zoo) is a decent area to live in?

Also, in what areas do the UC undergrads usually live?

Can't wait to meet everyone at orientation!

At first, I was very stressed out about this housing thing. My sister lives in Columbus and I always pictured living in apartments like she always did, when it was time for me to be off to medical school. The apartments in Columbus, if you follow me, are the nice, modern, cookie-cutter apartment complexes with a swimming pool and fairly nice landscaping deals. Cincinnati, at least where the med school is, is not like that at all. It's much older. Apartments are single buildings, square, older, and in some cases kept up only minimally (depends on the company). Of course this is just my impression. But, it seemed even in the "nicer" areas there were buildings that just didn't fit. My suggestion for you is what I chose: Hyde Park. Out of the four main areas I visited at and around the school (Clifton Gaslight, Clifton Heights, Hyde Park, and Mt. Adams) I liked Hyde Park the best. It's a tad bit more than Clifton or Clifton Heights, but it's kinda a tradeoff. Well, I liked Mt. Adams too, I don't know why anyone wouldn't, but it's a little too much for a med student, maybe I'd consider living there as a doc 😉. I didn't like Clifton Heights at all, it just seemed run down, plus there are fraternities and sororities. Now, don't get me wrong. I was in a fraternity, but my med school days are going to be much different. Clifton Gaslight would be my second choice. The residential area there is very nice, but the apartment buildings are old and don't seem to be taken care of as well, again just my impression upon visiting several apartments. There's Corryville too, though most people would say to avoid that as well. I know that one of the second years here TysonCook lives there and likes it. The Bellevue Gardens and Highland Commons are both in Corryville and seem really nice to live (also seem a bit pricer for Corryville, I'm paying slightly less in Hyde Park, which seems odd to me) and seem close to those Columbus-style buildings I mentioned (ie they're more modern), but for me personally, I just wanted to be a little bit farther from the med center instead of being in the shadows of it to live. I know I will be spending a lot of time there, it'll be nice to have a place to live that's a little bit farther away, a place in a good, safe area, and quiet and removed from the med center hub bub.

But, again to each his or her own. That was just my impression of Cincinnati (after THREE visits down there, including a two-day trip). Regardless of where we all choose to live, we're all in the med school thing together and I look forward to meeting everyone and getting back into the study mode, as weird as that sounds (been out of college for one year). But, I'm so happy with my apartment choice, and I am serious about eventually throwing some parties with my new classmates! I can't wait! 😉

Avondale is ok, but oakley/hyde park is much safer. I know professors and friends that live in avendale, but I think other neighborhoods are safer and nicer. Furthermore, the hyde park area has Ault Park. So, if you like to run, walk, or just want to throw the frisbee around, it is a very nice place to do it. Good luck on the apartment hunt.
O yeah, if it is right beside the zoo, the area sucks. You are asking to have something done to your car. If you want to totally escape school, live a 10 minute drive away. It sounds like many of your classmates are also living out there. So I am sure you will have just as good of an experience away from campus. Another option to look into is Mt. Lookout. Near the square is very nice. Plus, they have Zips(the best burger in town). It will be cheaper than hyde park. If you have any more questions, ask.

Yeah, Avondale is not the greatest, and if you are a female walking around late at night, could be a bit scary. Hyde park is great, I just hate driving to school, parking, car repair, gas etc. I really just like walking and being able to cruise home for a few hours and get some food at my will, instead of dreading traffic.

Can any of the already M1s and M2s (or higher) explain to me about these things:

1) Wireless phones--ie which service is THE BEST? SolidGold supplied some info early on about Verizon being tops (but that he was roaming on Cincinnati Bell Wireless which was good near the med center), but now I'm getting some additional information. I have Sprint now, and from what I understand (and from some minimal personal experience with it) it's not very good in the Cincinnati area. I have heard that Verizon is, but what's the deal with Cincinnati Bell Wireless?

2) Local telephone coverage?? Again, is Cincinnati Bell the way to go?

3) Internet connection via ZoomTown versus cable modems?? Also, Cincinnati Bell offers this, but do you have to pay for an ISP?

Also, if anyone already from Cincinnati who is going to be an M1 next year, you could help too!

1) Cell phones -- Cincinnati Bell Wireless is great, no contract to sign and it uses the same towers as AT&T, so it has great coverage. I can't remember when I dropped a call. Don't get Sprint, its horrible. Verizon and T- Mobile are also good alternatives.

2) Local telephone - only one choice and thats Cincinnati Bell

3)Zoomtown and Road Runner are about the same price depends if you want cable and you don't have to pay for the ISP, they are both around 50 bucks a month.
