Huge hospital, enormous volume. Considered on the short list as one of the best pediatric hospitals out there. Nevermind what US News and World Report says. They're ratings are based on criteria that doesn't mean much to trainees. The short list of excellent children's hospitals are:

CHOP and Boston for sure. Cincy, Seattle, DC, Pitt, Milwaukee, Denver. Train at one of these places and peds docs, no matter the specialty, will recognize.

Thanks kid. Know anything about working conditions, fellow happiness, etc?

U of Pitt has a resident who trained in pediatrics prior to going into anesthesiology--he told me that he planned on sub-specializing in peds. We discussed this specifically. He classified Boston children's and Children's of Philadelphia to be kind of the exceptional places to train and then ran off 4-5 other programs, which included Cincinnati Children's and Pittsburgh's program as 'not as elite' but still amazing places to pursue fellowship.

I don't know any specifics about the hospital/program, but I can tell you anything you want to know about Cincinnati! There's huge progress being made downtown right now with all sorts of new lofts, restaurants, bars, clubs, etc. They are even planning on having a streetcar system started by the end of this year! Its definitely a great place for young professionals to live.
I'm moving there this summer with my wife to start an IM residency. We'll be living in a new loft in Over the Rhine. Can't wait!

Sorry for the off topic post.

You guys are awesome. While on topic, any opinions about Atlanta's peds fellowship?

I'd like to stay away from Philly and Boston; cold and expensive, I'm sure both great places to train, but also think you can get some great training at other places as well.

This makes me laugh a little. Hope you don't get shot!

Hope you don't get shot, huh? Great...

Any advice on where to look for living then?

NOT Over the Rhine. Mt. Adams, Hyde Park, Mt. Lookout, Mt. Washington, Northern Kentucky, Blue Ash, Montgomery... all good areas.

Cincinnati is a dying city, hemorraging population, and has one of the worst cases of collective depression I have ever seen. Other than that, its a nice place... 🙂

Do NOT live in Over-the-Rhine--the epicenter of everything wrong in urban centers of any big city: Crime, drugs, poverty, panhandling and one of the highest concentrations of per-capita murder of any place in the US.

do not forget the hospital for sick children in toronto.

arguably on par with chop & boston.

...and toronto is just one amazingly cosmopolitan place to live!

I was just wondering through and thought I would give my 2 cents as a Cincy native and an employee at Children's.

Definitely do not live in over the rhine unless you do, indeed, want to get shot. The hospital itself is in a terrible neighborhood but they're in the process of trying to clean it up. I would definitely second the recommendation for Hyde Park or Mt. Adams if you want to stay on the Ohio side of the river. I myself live in Northern Kentucky, its way cheaper and it takes me about 20 minutes to get to work. Plus, No Ky is where the best bars are, IMHO.

As for CCHMC, I love it. I'm no where near anesthesiology (pediatric dentistry) but its a great atmosphere so I'd recommend it to anyone. And as a native, I haven't noticed any "collective depression" but it is a bit on the boring side, definitely no New York City.

Hope that helps.
