hey...

just wondering if anyone in this bank of military knowledge knows if it would be possible for me, as a civilian dependent, to get any rotations on an Army base (so I can be close to my to-be-husband)? How about chances of getting a residency with them? I've heard a bit about openings in military hospitals for civilian-physician jobs (as a dependent)...any insight on that??

Have any ideas on who to contact for more info?

Thanks 🙂

I really have no idea but my guess would be no on the residency/rotation spots in military hospitals if you are a civilian. Yes, military hospitals to have physician positions for civilians but I think you have to be board certified for those.

Clerkships are a possibility, the biggest hurdle would be your school would need a 'memorandum of agreement' with the military hospital you wanted to work in. It is usually already set up between certain schools for their students to rotate at certain hospitals (eg, U Hawaii at Tripler, EVMS at Portsmouth, and U Wash at Madigan). You can always call the GME office at whatever hospital you were interested in and see what may be able to be set up.

As for residencies that's a no go unless you sign up for HPSP. You must be a member of the military to participate in the military match.

this issue came up for me when my wife - a fellow MD - and i were trying to match.

there is at least one army program that will accept civilians; i believe it is the FP program at wbamc in el paso, tx. so, it is, at least, logistically possible, but the issue is that a program will take military applicants preferentially over civilian ones. if your specialty or location of choice are particularly competitive, then you can most likely kisses your chances goodbye.

by rotations, do you mean medical school rotations? if yes, then most programs do accept any medical student who wants to rotate, assuming there are no military students who want the slots. i did a rotation as a civilian at a military hospital.

if you just want to work at a military hospital, then there are tons of job opportunities for civilians. if you're a physician, then you'll need to be BE/BC. keep in mind though, that if you're hired as an independent contractor, then your hours can really ebb and flow depending on how many staff are deployed. e.g., i know one ER doc who is looking for work elsewhere because he was only scheduled for 4 shifts over the next 2 months after an army doc returned from iraq.

Rotations - yes, residency - doubtful, jobs - depends on specialty.
