I have a question for those of you who were GMO’s (FS and DMO included) and are now doing civilian residencies. How difficult it is to re-adapt to hospital/academic life after 3 years of mind numbing GMO duties? Was your GMO time helpful at all during your actual residency (not selection)? Were you in disadvantage (or advantage) compared to your non-military, fresh out of internship peers; especially during the first few months of residency? Any other comments that might ease my introduction to residency life are appreciated. Thanks.

It really depends on what residency your starting.

I did my 4 as a GMO, and started an anesthesiology residency 2 months ago.
I think my time as a GMO helped my maturity as a physician.

GMO certainly wasn't useful in expanding medical knowledge, but it did develop the intangible stuff like knowing whats important.

If your starting something thats more primary care such as FP, or EM, I think GMO might be of more direct benefit.

I like to think of GMO time as an extremely extended unsupervised family practice rotation. If that applys in a positive way to your residency, then it will be useful, otherwise, most any benefit it has is the development of decision making and self confidence.

good luck,

i want out (of IRR)
