Current USU student here.

I am wondering if any USU alumni/current students have ever heard of a USU student going directly to a civilian sponsored residency after graduation. I feel like I read somewhere that we are all required to do a MTF-based residency, but I can't remember where I heard that. Do we have the ability to rank civilian programs? I'm sure this info will be disseminated eventually, but I bet it's a nightmare to figure out if we need to wade through the military and civilian "match" process.

Yes, it has been done in the past. You simply rank deferment as well as the other options. You better be at the top of the class to have any shot though.

I know of exactly one person who has done this. There may be others, but the total number is going to be low.

That being said, I wouldn't count on it. DO NOT go to USU if that's your goal.

Too late. He already is a Uniformed Services University student. If you go to sponsorship route, you will increase your pay back time even more. Be careful with doing this.

IIRC, USUHS students are not allowed to do a civilian deferred residency per the match information given to us applying this past year. I don't have access to MODS so I can't verify it. I just seem to remember reading that.

I have seen USUHS students do civilian sponsored residencies but not deferred ones. Probably easier after military internship +/- GMO. That is a massive amount of payback.

Thanks for the info all! I will almost definitely land in a military residency, but I am just exploring the thought. The more experience I get in some MTFs, I can't help but compare the number of cases/type of exposure that military residencies offer vs. civilian residencies. I already have a crazy-long commitment, so that's not a huge concern. I just want to make sure that I get the best residency training possible.

Find the military program that best suits your needs. The volume will not be comparable to a busy civilian program, you have to accept that at this point. There are still some good training programs out there that do their best to make up for the lack of cases with good didactics. Didactics does not = volume of cases as far as learning, but it does help bridge the gap if you are motivated. Civilian deferment is a figment of your imagination at this point, as I think we can all think of one person in our class who was deferred. So if your odds are 1 in 165, I wouldn't even be considering this possibility at this point.
