Can we claim some of our expenses (application fees, secondary fees, interview fees) during the applcation cycle in our taxes? I'm working in the a non-healthcare field right now so doesn't this count as going in a new field expenses, so it probably can't be claimed as anything right?

i don't think they do but just want to double check since most of you are in the same position.

Right, you can't claim them (Sorry!)

If I am currently working in the medical field, can I claim my med school application expenses on my taxes?

Unfortunately not. They are not educational expenses nor job-hunt expenses. You cannot deduct education related expenses as a business expense if they prepare you for a new job. Thus, you can deduct continuing education in your current field, but not medical school, law school, et al. Even if you are currently in the medical field, because an MD opens up new career doors, you cannot deduct the costs a business expense. The tax regs are very clear about this one.

I did based on my reading of the regulations. Because your are already employed in your profession: physician, and you are seeking employment in that profession, it should be deductible. I would encourage you to look at IRS publication 529. Basically it boils down to this: New job, same profession: deductible, New job, new profession: not deductible.

I worked in HIV research for a year and a half before applying to medical school. If I want to pursue a research career, but with an M.D., can I deduct the expenses since technically it's in the same field-medical research?

Nope. Medical school prepares you for a completely new field and thus is not deductible. This is very clear per the tax regs.
