Hi Guys,

I know this has been covered a few times in the past, but I think it would be great to clarify certain points.

1. Are we including summer jobs here?
2. Are we including away rotations?
3. Are we including rotations at our home instiution?
4. Are we including anything else?

Any help on this matter would be greatly appreciated guys. Thanks in advance.

Did you get paid?

If yes, it's a work experience. It's up to you whether to add those before med school.

Thanks for that.

Surely our away rotations don't go under 'research' or 'volunteering', nor do they go under 'training', so I'm wondering if sub-Is and aways go under work experience?

I definitely think so. I'm a final year Irish student, though, and they hold a lot of value for us, so I think they're important to highlight.

In general:

US students do NOT list away rotations as work experiences.
IMG students OFTEN list away rotations as work experiences, as they are a core aspect of their applications. That being said, we'll see it in your LOR's, so honestly I don't think it matters at all.

I'm a US born IMG that went to a Caribbean school and did every single rotation at the same hospital in NY. So I should be listing them all under work experiences? If so, should I list every single rotation? I just figured this would all be in my MSPE that gets sent out.
Thanks

Please don't do this. It will all be in your MSPE. The only people who should list clinical rotations as work experiences are non-carib IMG's who have US experience, especially if it's not included in their MSPE's (which many foreign ones do not)

Thanks for the information. As I mentioned, my med school in Ireland so it most likely wouldn't do any harm to include it as work experience?

The issue isn't about geography. Certain things don't just automatically become OK depending on the country you're in. The point is, you should only put away rotations/sub-Is in your "work experience" section if you really need to highlight the fact that you have some experience in the US. If that's mentioned elsewhere in your application (it should be on your MSPE and your LORs), then you don't need to put it under work experience. If you do, you risk looking like you're just trying to pad your application, which makes your entire application look less legitimate.
