I was wondering what your schools policy is for this exam. As I understand it, for our school, we only have to sit for the exam, not necessarily pass it. I have heard that others require a pass for graduation. What does yours require?

Just have to sit for it before graduation, that's for LECOM.

You will need to pass it to get board certification.
No Level III before passing Level II.

Your are right - many of the schools differ on this.
KCUMB requires that you take it by October 30 or 31 and you must pass to graduate.

Gubernaculum07 - I think you are thinking of the computerized test - if so you are correct there.

What if you are a DO going through an ACGME residency and sitting for AMA board certification? Must you take and pass the DO PE then? Or just the allo PE? Or neither?

AMA board certification
i know it may seem like semantics but...the AMA does not provide certification the ACGME does. The AMA's sole purpose for existing is to protect physician and patient rights through lobbying for purposeful/meaningful legislation (as opposed to our AOA's vital push to get all students to use O-MS in place of the ever inadequate MS)

next year AZCOM students have to pass to graduate, for my class we just have to take the thing...

to answer your question ... if you want to take COMLEX 3, you need to have passed both COMLEX-2 CE and COMLEX 2-PE.

If you want to take USMLE Step 3, you need to have passed both USMLE 2-CK and USMLE 2-CS (their version of the PE exam).

Of course to get permenant licensure, you need to finish all 3 series of either USMLE or COMLEX. So either way, you need to take some standardize patient exam.

Be aware that there are several states (California being one of them) that REQUIRES completion of COMLEX if you're a DO if you want to get a license. The USMLE will not satisfy the CA Board of Osteopathic Medicine requirement.

Edit:

Arizona requires COMLEX if you are seeking initial licensure OR if you've taken Step 3 of COMLEX within the last 7 years. You may get away without comlex if you try licensure by endorsement route and have been in practice/training for more than 7 years and hold a valid license in another state ... but contact the board to be sure

Florida requires COMLEX for initial licensure (along with an approved AOA-internship OR if the FL osteopathic board approves your internship). For licensure by endorsement, Florida REQUIRES COMLEX. From their website: NOTE: The Board does not consider the USMLE or FLEX exams to be comparable to the NBOME. (the bold is actually from the website)

Michigan Osteopathic Board specifically request scores from the NBOME in their application material.

These are just some states that require COMLEX (listing is not comprehensive) ... and since you have to take COMLEX 1, 2 and 2-PE anyway while in school ... why not just take COMLEX 3 and not limit yourself in the future (and if you want to take USMLE 2-CE, USMLE 2-CK, and USMLE 3, no one will stop you)

Is OMM included in the PE exam? I have heard a lot about this OMM part being added now but can't seem to find the requirements anywhere?

Yes, you may have to do OMM when properly indicated (not on every patients). Any type of OMT is fair game, except HVLA.

If you want to do HVLA, you can always mention it in your SOAP notes.

I stand corrected. I was surprised to read that on the NBOME website. You must pass both COMLEX 2CE and PE to take COMLEX 3.
