Class of 2010: how's the job hunting so far?

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I'd make it 15 minutes before I told someone to **** off and get kicked out.

But I'd be employed for like 15 minutes...

No you wouldn't. The third or fouth time you got the **** kicked out of you for running your mouth you'd wise up and get with the program...trust me. I think the Amry would be good for you. It was good for me.

Back on job search topics...

Though this is less relevant for new grads than for those who have been out for a few years, you should have someone good look at your resume. I always thought my resume-building skills were great , but then I got a rude awakening when I sat down with a career specialist who showed me how blah my resume really was. So I reformatted it - just in time to get my third dream job. 🙂 After all, getting invited to the interview is the hardest step. At least for me it feels that way. 🙂

That's my wife's doing. I only know what you are talking about because you apparently keep giving me **** and they send me emails about it.

Have you ruled out Indian Health Service? If not, the Crownpoint, NM(very rural, high elevation, moderate climate) 32 bed hospital has 2 openings for hospital pharmacists. http://www.ihs.gov/Navajo/crownpoint/index.cfm?module=cpsu_dept_pharmacy

Looks like there are also 2 hospital pharmacist jobs at the Anchorage, AK hospital, 150 beds and 1 pharmacist opening at the Anchorage primary care center. There is also an anti-coag outpatient job with the VA in anchorage right now, M-F, 9 to 5 job: http://jobview.usajobs.gov/GetJob.aspx?JobID=88354108 . Discover Alaska!

You guys could go for loan repayment program and eat away at some debt...

What if we wanted to take vacation?

Wouldn't that cripple the **** out of where we were working?

You could always apply for the Anchorage VA position and have her apply to IHS. Just an idea, might be a fun adventure for few years and allow you guys to pay down some debt and qualify for GI Bill benefits, if you consider further schooling, you can transfer GI Bill benefits to your spouse too. Providence Hospital in Anchorage also has a couple job openings

It is definitely what I would do if I was in your situation but then again I love skiing, hiking, fishing, rafting, and hunting. I am just trying to push what I would do on you.😉

Both mama and papa puffin incubate the egg. They take turns 🙂 awww They also construct the nest together. We learned a lot about these guys in marine biology. Did you know they spend most of their lives in the open ocean?!??! They only go back to the coast where they were born to breed.

I heard it is also difficult to emigrate to Europe as an American. Is this true? Maybe I will claim asylum in Canada, become a citizen, and then get into EU that way.

Nope, just difficult to emigrate to the EU from outside the EU in general, unless you can claim asylum there, which I doubt you'd be able to do as a Canadian/American.

The trick with the EU is to try to find some upstream ancestry you have, and claim an EU citizenship by lineage. YMMV depending on the country, how far removed they are, and military service requirements (generally less of an issue these days).

PS: You don't need to claim asylum to come to Canada.

Providence is a good company to work for - so I hear.

I almost took a position with them in the PNW.

Can you give reasons why is that?

B/c 'Pharmacist' has been scrapped off from the new Skilled Occupation List. Only people under certain occupations can apply for the Aussie permanent residency.

Alternatively, I think you can join the french foreign legion, serve three years, and apply for citizenship.

Do you think employers will start treating us worse or pay us less due to the lack of demand for our wonderful selves?

yes and i have seen this already happening to be honest

hii..anyone know of any jobs in southern california- not a recent grad and only retail experience.. licensed in cali. applied so far- kaiser, target, costco, inland empire hospitals, walgreens, and more.. no responses from anyone.. not sure how else to go about my search.. any advice??

i know the new grads are out of school now so more competition.. this situation is frustrating since when i went to pharmacy school all you heard was "ohh there's such a shortage of pharmacists" and "pharmacists won't have problems finding a job" blah blahh blahh... sorry had to vent!

Im just curious but how long ago did you graduate and what happened to your old job?

I just graduated in May and currently work for Cleveland Clinic Foundation at a regional hospital in the system. I had three years of retail experience but landed a 7 on 7 off overnight job in the Cleveland Clinic system by 1: having great APPE's (FDA, Cleveland Clinic Main Campus, UH Case Main Campus, Nuclear), 2: having an "in" with the director at main campus even though I did not get the job at the main campus, 3: being a "normal" and "well-adjusted" person.

I am so fortunate and thankful for the opportunity. I'm actually pretty pumped about the night shift, I get lots of vacation and only work 70 but get the full time salary. I have so many friends that tell me how badly they want to get out of retail already, and this is at the graduate intern step. I actually received a sign-on bonus at 10K, but yes, the pay is about 15K less than the retail offer I had with my previous employer. Nevertheless, I will be less stressed, only have to work 70 hours a week, the benefits are much better, and I get more vacation days (28 PTO days in addition to the every other week off).

Next year in Ohio another pharmacy school graduates their first class, its going to be rough to get a job in the future. I was top 10-15ish in my class, and only 3 other graduates actually have a staff hospital job (not counting the 10 that did residencies), I would tell any 2011 or 2012'er to have an excellent APPE schedule, to make connections as they are >>>>>>> than grades (in fact at no time was I ever asked for grades) and to try so hard for a hospital job.
