Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hola everyone. Another 2013 hopeful here. I'm applying EDP to the Medical College of Georgia. If I'm lucky enough to get in by October 1, I'm planning on teaching English overseas. My friend did it in Korea, and she absolutely loved it. It definitely sounds pretty enticing. Good luck to everyone!!!!!!!!

Paz,
Alex

PS - Right now, it looks like the Dutch will take the EuroCup. I was hoping that Italy wouldn't make it to the final 8 but oh well.

Man, can't see the link. It isn't work-friendly.

(Also known as : The website you are attempting to view is contrary to the mission of William Carey University...)

Sadly, I know not of this story (or maybe happily?)

I'm always jealous when I hear about stuff like this. I just sat in the corner and tried to peer over shoulders. 😡

Really though, I was just excited to be wearing scrubs, mask, and cap. That was the coolest, most doctor-y I'd ever felt.

Same here! I've only been allowed to stand in the corner and I am always instructed not to touch a thing... but it's still VERY exciting just being in the OR and wearing scrubs. I feel like I belong when I'm walking through the halls of the hospital wearing surgical greens.... i love it!! 😀

I'm glad I'm not the only nerd who gets excited about scrubbing in and/or sitting in. I eat it up!

I'm such a nerd - I have a "souvenir" from each of my first surgeries - (first watched, first scrubbed, etc). Getting up quite a collection. Haha. Scrub cap, bonnet, that type of thing. Pretty much anything they will let me take home that is clean.

My best friend picked on me the other night saying my next take-home would be a placenta. 😆

 i keep surgery souvenirs too... glad i'm not the only one!

That is insanely gross!!! Placenta cocktail?? ewww... :barf:

yeah that really is the grossest one - thats raw, and uncooked.

sorry didn't mean to gross so many people out 😀

I know I was nauseated for a good week after I first heard of this "option"

I got to take home some bladder stones once....haha, no joke! They're geometrically impressive. They came out of a dog though.

Eh, I didn't ever break the 900 character limit when describing my activities/ECs on the AMCAS. I feel like the adcoms read enough of them to know when someone is just blowing smoke up their butts, so I kept it short and to the point. Once I ran out of ways to describe what I did sufficiently, I stopped.

Some of mine, although not submitted, are only like a sentence or two long. Is that bad? too short?

I am extremely jealous of ppl who were smart enough to take pics or mementos from their first surgery experience. Did not occur to me. But I did feel rocking in my scrubs.

In spirit of the friendliness of this thread you all should type this into your browser, with your first and last name in place of "first name" and "last name." Do not just click on the link cause it will ruin it. Then save it and do it as needed throughout the app process:

Hope everyone is having a great day!

Well, my memento WAS the scrubs. Instead of changing out of them when I went back to the locker room, I just put my clothes on over top of them. Comfiest pajamas I ever had!

I would have loved to, and thought about it, but it was a place that they were taken out of a machine so someone had to swipe their card for me to get a pair and would have been charged if I took them.

Why is it that the scrubs in hospitals are always better than ones from the store? They are always comfier and just, well, better.

Yeah, this hospital just kept them in stacks in the hallway, so I don't think anyone was going to miss them. I was a little worried that they looked a little bulky under my clothes. Wouldn't that raise a few awkward questions I wouldn't really want to answer. 😀

As far as their comfort issue, I have no idea why they're so great. They look like they cost about 6 cents to mass produce, so why are they so dang comfy?!

Geez, it has really picked up here! Class of 2013 is wassup! This is going to be a great year. 👍😀

Hi guys!!! I'm a year behind you, but I've been reading the thread and just wanted to say best of wishes to all of you. I can't wait until it's my turn to apply! I'm studying like crazy for the MCAT- it's about 10 or 11 months away for me!

Oh, definitely. I think the haters on SDN are good practice for letting crap roll off your back though. I figure there will be plenty of nastiness coming our way when we get into the hospitals, and the thicker the skin and more firm our self-confidence (confidence, not arrogance) the better off we are. Just ignore the people on here evaluating your chances (assuming you have other less biased, more reliable sources).

Yes to euro cup, no to celtics, which makes me a traitor since I'm in Boston. Who's your fave in the euro cup?

Italy...I'm from there, and we're going to quarter finals! WOOHOO!!!!! I'm also a Celtics fan, in theory, since I was in Boston for college. Who are YOU rooting for in the Euro cup?

YESSSSS I KNOW! I watched a triple CABG a couple of years ago and got to scrub in and I remember seeing people on the subway looking at me wearing scrubs and I felt SO GOOD! The booties, cap, and mask are currently on my teddy bear at home 🙂

Yes Italy won the last World Cup, but I was definitely rooting for France. It would have been nice to see Zidane finish his career with a Cup victory. And please don't be one of those people who don't know anything about futbol that say "Zidane was a disgrace blah blah blah." He is undoubtedly one of the best players to ever touch the ball. Granted, what he did was foolish, but that doesn't tarnish his otherwise illustrious career. When you see people like Zidane play, you understand why the sport is often referred to as the beautiful game. As far as the rest of the EuroCup goes, I would also like to see Sweden make a good showing. Henrik Larsson has been one of my favorite players; they even called him out of retirement from international play for this tournament. He epitomizes class and is just an amazing striker. But ultimately, if the Dutch keep up their play, I don't think anyone else in the world right now can touch them.

Paz,
Alex

Hahaha oh for Gods sake, people are so defensive about Zidane. He was a spectacular player who had an idiotic temper and lost it a few minutes before his retirement. I respect him immensely as a soccer player, but considering how he let down his team and his country by extension, I have trouble respecting him as a person. And believe it or not, I know a thing or two about soccer. I grew up in two countries were we did little other than watch games. And either way, Zidane's history has no bearing on the current state of affairs. France is not playing nearly as well as they did when he was around, and no team should suddenly become incapable cause they lost one player. Doesn't say much about them as a team.
That being said, the Italians as usual played horribly in the beginning (the fact that they were cheated out of a goal/ an illegal goal was scored against them didn't help, mind you, but it's kind of our fault that refs hate our guts) but they're finally getting it together. The Dutch are playing well....Von Persie is definitely scaring me a bit. However, I also feel very strongly that Italy has the best goalkeeper in the world, which makes me feel better. And considering the fact that MANY of our best players are currently injured, I think we're dealing pretty well...much better than France minus Zidane. Anyways, don't get your panties in a bunch. I'm just thrilled to see some soccer fans here, I wasn't throwing a gauntlet.

Sorry. I didn't mean for my post to be directed towards you or your views on Zidane. I was really referring to the bunches of people that only know Zidane as the guy who gave Materazzi a headbutt to the chest. Actually, it's quite nice to have someone on here that knows about the game. And agreed, it is pitiful that France can't seem to do anything during this tournament. What do you think about van Bronckhorst? He may be a cause for concern as well. The goal van Nistelrooy scored will be debated for quite some time, but I just don't think you can rely on a call, especially for someone with his ability to find the back of the net. Someone should always make sure he's playing with his back facing the goal. If he gets the chance to turn around, well we all know what happens. Again, my apologies for coming off as rude. That wasn't my intention at all.

Paz,
Alex

PS - At least we're getting more futbol on ESPN instead of that World Series of Poker crap.

Haha, that's great. I feel just as nerdy, but at least I"m not alone!

Work is HELL today, it's refund day and I work in financial aid. :scared:.
7.4 hrs to go!

Bump! Wassup everybody!

Hey,

no worries! Yeah, I can't even tell you how glad I am that I actually get to watch all the games...and talk about it with people on SDN! 2013 is going to be the best class ever! (Sorry, I'm trying to pep myself up to write the inevitable 20 essays...)
van Bronckhorst is definitely excellent...that last goal against Italy was GORGEOUS! As sad as I was that he'd scored, I really had to hand that to him. Yeah, the Dutch are really playing beautifully this year. Where did that come from anyway??
Agreed, world series of poker needs to die a slow death. 🙂

By the way, I can't wait to meet you all on the interview trail! It looks like we're going to have some fun classes next year.
I feel like we should make up some sort of signal to indicate that we're on the 2013 forum or something, like a special handshake just for cool people. Or nerdy people. I'd enjoy it. Imagine, we're walking around our favorite school and meet someone and through his handshake you just KNOW. Then you can get all weepy and be like "Blackdr2b!" or "likeclockwork!!" and everyone would wonder what the hell you're on and why they're not in the cool kids club.

Just THINK of the POSSIBILITIES.

Not a whole lot B2B. Just livin the dream.

You?

Wassup Clock, I feel you on the livin' the dream part. Im just chillaxin, filling out these activities. It's the last thing I have to do and then I am finished. Did you do the arms thing (arms alternating moving up and down above your head) when you said just livin' the dream?

Being weepy is a good thing right? 😕

It's funny you ask because I used to "raise the roof" (as the kids call it) all the time back in the day. I eventually got shamed out of it by my friends, but I still do it in my head at the appropriate times.

And yes, saying livin' the dream is indeed an appropriate moment.

Might I suggest the "rocket ship"? It's where two people go in for a fist bump, but when they connect, the initiator raises his hand up with a finger pointed (as the rocket ship) and the other person wiggles their fingers below it (as the flames from the ship). It's typically accompanied with some nice rocket ship noises.

...or do you think this would look odd being done between two professionally dressed people waiting to interview for medical school?

I was asking because in wedding crashers, will farrell says just livin' the dream and I was wondering if you got that from the movie.

What would look odd is when one professionally dressed person attempts to do this with another that has no idea who the hell they are, or what the hell they are trying to do lol... 😛

What we need is a signal that would start the hand shake off so we can first find the 2013 SDNers...

I figured if you started it, and the other person had no idea what was going on, you could act like you were going to scratch your eye or pop your knuckles or something.

Maybe we could come up with a challenge of some kind?

Challenger: "Hey, what's the weather like where you live?"

Challengee: "It's always sunny in Philadelphia."

THEN comes the rocket ship.

Hahahaha I definitely just tried this by myself and laughed out loud. And by loud, I mean LOUD. I like it. And I agree that we need a sign before the handshake. Suggestions are welcome.

Oh and yeah, being weepy is a good thing, if you get weepy over stuff like this. Which I don't. Really.

Well once I get that acceptance, I will definitely be getting weepy!:cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry::cry:

No kidding...what's your first choice? Or choiceS?

HOWARD UNIVERSITY COLLEGE OF MEDICINE!!!!! I have been praying about going to Howard for like 3 yrs now. I pray that this is my time!

What about you?

Hey BDR2B!!

I don't think they should let any of us into medical school since it is 1 in the afternoon on a Wednesday and we are all on SDN... lol :laugh:

I see one problem with this scenario: when someone asks us how the whether is where we live (could happen), and we say this. Then they find out we are not for Philadelphia and ppl think we are weird before we even start the interview...

But I do like the rocket ship! 😍

Hmmmm... Well then let's think of a better challenge. It has to be semi-loosely related to whatever question is seems reasonable to someone outside the "inner circle" that's watching. It also has to be unrelated enough that someone wouldn't legitimately answer the question that way.

C'mon, we're a bunch of reasonably intelligent young people here. We can figure something out.

I do think the rocket ship should follow any challenge though.

BDR2B: I'll join in the prayers for you to get into Howard. I'm sure you can do it!!!

Carly: I say we embrace the weird factor! We're premed, it's not like we're known for our savoir fair...
