I don't understand why it is such a necessity to read: its like the DaVinci Code "must read" phenomenon for pre-meds...I read it about a year and a half ago - though the graphic scenes were over the top, basically all anyone ever needs to know about it is that we are going to lose our souls and become gomer-resenting physicians just waiting for retirement and a chance at normal life. Eh, not too shabby I guess - I'm already a cynic

Well, as a pre-med, we're kind of expected to scoff at what we read in the book and say that's not what medicine is like. According to doctors I've talked to about this book, it does a pretty good job of representing what their intern years were like.. the feeling of helplessness and the lack of moral support from the higher up "slurpers" are things that interns seem to still grapple with today. Aside from the orgy in the resusication room (I kinda doubt that happened), it's at least someone's viewpoint of what internship is like..

My PI just shakes his head, smiles and tells me to read the book again during 4th year, and then again at the end of my residency. I'll wait and see what that's about before I make any final judgments about the material in the book.

I think the trick is doing it after you've finished the memorization in med school. Once you land the top residency, how much you remember is a moot point 😀

Oh yeah, you're absolutely right - I don't know about the whole biblical status thing that it has with pre-meds.. it's a little paradoxical, actually. The only reason I read it was because my PI suggested that I read his copy. It was a pretty entertaining read - I'm told that some of the Fatman's Laws are actually legit for the most part.

Funny you mention it, I just finished reading the copy of House of God that my PI gave me to read. I thought it was funny if not a bit ridiculous. Although maybe 1/5 of the book is basically softcore porn, but I don't mind that bit 😉 But afterwards I commented that it seems that while the author has great points about the psychological abuse that interns were taking, he seems to be exaggerating with a lot of these details. And my PI was like.. nope, that's what it really is like for the most part. I'm like, geezus. He said that's perfectly normal if you don't believe me, just read it again during M4, and then again after residency. But I enjoyed reading it, though I can see how it would make a woman uncomfortable reading it.. (it was written in the 70's if that means anything)

I don't mind the male POV or the sex. I think it was just a really bad choice to read while I'm trying to eat! So many gross details! I really don't want to be reading about old people farting while I'm eating lunch.

I also don't really like the writing style. I keep rolling my eyes at it. This just isn't my genre. I thought Cath-22 was only okay.

Ultimatums = bad, period. If you're a girl and you're going to give a guy an ultimatum, it's not likely to work out in your favor. Just isn't. Trust me.

I was referring to when I first moved out of my house for college back in the day...I was living on my own...and i liked to munch on carrots...a lot. I soon found out you can turn your skin slightly orange by eating enough ! I wish I had some pictures...
