!@#$ research...
I concur.
!@#$ research...
I wouldn't change my major if I could. I love me some math. 😀
Not that anyone cares... but I like sharing.
I started out as a math major... then I realized that being a math major at MIT meant that you have to be in a whole 'nother league than what I am in.
So... drizzt went to MIT, started out as a math major, played in a couple WSOP main events. Next drizzt's gonna tell me that he counted cards in blackjack and used his winnings to pay for pb + AMCAS + med school. Am I close!?!? jk lol
lol.Haha, I am retired at blackjack. I lost a HUGE hand I was playing two handed... it was heartbreaking. Not ever going to play again. I'll stick to poker... I've had bad beats but they are pretty few and far between.
Best and most improbable hand ever happened to me about three weeks ago in a cash game at a local casino...
2-4 no limit, I'd bought in for $300 and doubled up early and had been playing pretty tight for a few hands with a lot of wild betting going on, and then I got dealt bullets, and raised to $20 preflop in 1st position, to which the next player immediately reraised to $40. I called, we were heads up, and I flopped aces full of kings... Of course I checked, and the other guy pushed with ~$500... I was likebut of course called, and he turned over kings, and I was like 😱 turn was a jack and river was the last ace... 😀 I not only raked the ~1k pot but also we won the bad beat jackpot which got me another $1000 😀 The other guy got almost the same amount total though, so we were both happy... (loser, 40% winner, 20% and rest of the table splits 40%) Pretty good deal all around! Ironically, if I hadn't gotten the river, I would have still almost won the same amount of money (less like $60) haha.

Sheesh! 😱 I always laugh when I see someone get beat on the river anywhere.. but that's only when the winner had a hand that he had no business going all in with, etc. And of course, I'm not laughing if I'm the one who got screwed by the river card!
Fortunately I don't consider myself good enough at poker that I'd buy into a game with more than $20. I was decent enough to win games against other kids in the dorms (ah, freshman year was great) in 1-2 no limit.. but I know I won't be any good when I go up against people who have at least some control over their non-verbal communication (tells, etc). I tend to rely a great deal on visual cues in my daily life, lol. You'll know what I mean when you meet me in the fall.
But don't be dragging me to any local casinos on WI.. I didn't know WI had casinos
Interesting. I might have to join y'all in poker if I end up going to MCW.We'll have a bunch of poker events in the first few months of school, me and a few other people usually organize poker nights (either tournaments or cash games reasonably often (every month or so).
Did you know there is a deaf guy in our class? (I believe he has either cochlear implants or hearing aids though) He has a woman that the school pays for to follow him around with some sort of device and transcribe all the lectures to his laptop. Is that normal?

Sounds like a good time.Cool! We have some interschool events, with WMS. The last event was about 2 weeks ago, and WMS paid for MCW people to attend a conference and go to some really nice restaurants on WMS's tab. They had a mixer with UW and it was pretty fun (although there were some communication problems, we were invited to the dinner but they never told us about it) Oh well, it was a good time and we had fun partying with the MCW people!
We had one pretty big tournament this year with 22 people, the total pot was about $500. Most of our cash games are pretty small time ($20 buy in and unlimited rebuys, of course). In business school we had BIG tournaments and cash games ($2-3k total payouts) but med students don't have as much money haha I like to alternate poker between tournaments and cash games just so it stays interesting!
Sounds like a good time.
Speaking of Chicago, my current other choice is RFUMS, but I'll decide before next Friday. It was... I personally think Madison is much more fun that Milwaukee to hang out in (but some people disagree, Milwaukee is fun in the summer, with summerfest and all that) Chicago is of course the best though in the area...

MCW is (slightly) cheaper, and my probable choice.RFUMS isn't really in chicago... it's in "north chicago" but I guess you knew that.
My friend is a M1 there, she thought it was OK I guess. My guess is you'll probably get off a WL but I would pick MCW. Is the cost much different?

RFUMS said they'd get our fin aid packages to us this week though, so I'm waiting a few days just in case.

MCW won't be getting them out till June...That makes sense, that's awful late to be getting out fin aid packages isn't it? I turned in FAFSA last sunday and got my package yesterday already haha

MCW, probably. Might change depending on how generous RFUMS is with the $$$RFUMS isn't quite in Chicago but I know what you mean. It's nice that Madison isn't that far from Chicago, where most of my old HS friends live now. Where are you leaning towards going right now?
Oh, and any waitlist acceptances would influence me later too...MCW, probably. Might change depending on how generous RFUMS is with the $$$

That sounds like it would work. Honestly I think besides rotations/patient contact and M3 year, most of what you learn is on written page/computer anyways. I go to lecture most of the time but I don't necessarily get that much out of it. Josh is an awesome guy, fun to hang out with too!
WashU, Dartmouth, USC would all make my life interesting.Nice, pining for any waitlist acceptances in particular?
Yup, I've actually met him once way before either of us decided on medicine. Dude's full of great stories, mostly involving alcohol. Ask him to tell you what happened about the one time he got drunk and got on his mom's computer.. 😉

I'm awakeAnyone up? Just got home and my buzz is wearing off...
I'm awake
nightSeeing as it's nearing 4 AM on the East Coast, I'm gonna try and get some sleep 🙂
Had a nice run around UCLA. The campus is awesome in the morning. It is so calm, peaceful and serene.🙂
Swarley has dysentery.
Jeez, you definitely are embarrassing that early bird who wanted to get the worm. Are you going to miss UCLA? You took a beating in that UCLA vs Baylor thread, haha.
Btw, !@#$ research... I'm trying to wrap my synthetic organic up, and so I've been coming into the lab for hours every day. Ran a multi-step reaction and worked it up yesterday, was in the lab from 11 till 8. Come in today to analyze the fractions, and my !@#$ing column degraded my !@#$ing product into stuff that I can't even come close to recognizing. The NMRs look nasty as hell.
oregon trail eh?Ksmi has a fever.
