I might end up doing that. I got a Samsung NC10 (10.5", long battery life) and I love how portable it is. I'm going to use it as my primary machine and get an external monitor once I move in, and then I'm going to wait and see if I need something with more power, in which case I'll eventually get a desktop.
 
Actually, I'm kind of thinking of ditching the desktop and buying a bigass HDTV, maybe even plasma. Like a 40 inch.. and mounting it on the wall above my desk.

That way I can look at powerpoint slides, etc. and even watch TV on it. Now that would be bad@$$.

I bought the tv already, but now I have to wait and see if I'll be able to afford a new pc.
 
I am going to bring my current desktop PC and tablet PC. I may end up getting a new tablet if it becomes too slow but it works fine for now. My desktop PC is really fast so it will be fast enough for years to come. All I need now is a smartphone.

I might also pick up another monitor, they are so cheap right now.

Funny saderstaff email from one of our professors (regarding our telephone transition)

I guess I must be really low down on the totem pole because my attached attachment has no pink areas.

I would love to have a digital telephone with lights and buttons. Gracious, I would love to have a telephone that I didn't rescue from a garage sale three years ago. I would be happy with a speaker phone or maybe one with little festive blinking lights. Maybe even a phone that wasn't the same line as the department fax line which prints a lovely vertical line on the left border of received faxes. Or one that I could punch a button and get an extension number instead of having to perform search and rescue on the faculty/staff address paper list. Or at least could tell who was calling so that I could selectively pretend not to be in the office (because now if I don't answer, the phone goes to the fax machine instead of voice mail).

Are those of us not included in the upgrade eligible for a one-time only university-issued stimulus check? (You could tax the ones who have the new and improved telephones…that approach seems to work for the feds.)

just calculated my budget for M1

I'll need to take out 8600 stafford subsidized loan, and hopefully mcw grants me 5000 institutional subsidized loan, and I'll be set 🙂

yea I use my computer as my TV.

You can buy a USB tv tuner (if you use laptop) or a PCI-express internal tv tuner (if you use desktop) and watch tv on your monitor.

yea that should be fine, but it might be less eye strain on a 24 inch if you are also going to use it as a computer monitor. For TV/movies it will be fine with 23"
 
Probably 4/5 because some lame 2014'ers knocked it down a few pegs in their votes

I wonder if I'll ever hear anything from Maryland. I'm still under "active consideration"...they're so mean to IS residents...90% chance of WL and I still haven't been told anything officially, not to mention they only say top or bottom half these days. 👎
 
last time I went to St. Louis, Mark had just broken the Maris record of 62 home runs.

Yeah, the couple I had certainly were lower on my list than UMC, so I'm thrilled to not be playing the waiting game.

I did get a waitlist (I think? Penn State called it a post-interview hold) but I already withdrew from that. It's the same idea as OMBD's. I'm just glad not to be waiting on say, WashU or something like that!

Good luck as you wait to hear from Maryland.. a few of my friends from undergrad are there now and for the most part they seem pretty happy with it.. well, as much as you can be happy if you're from CA with the bleak prospect of 4 more years of Baltimore. :meanie: Who knows, you might like Valhalla more...

All of them. Well I haven't had ice cream in a long time but I'm sure I could go on an ice cream eating binge and not feel too guilty. :meanie:
