Class of 2013!!!

Hey classmates!

I spent the day at Ocean Beach in SF today and am now trying to tell myself to stop fantasizing about UCSF all day every day...cause I'll end up being really depressed when I dont get in. Sigh.

Do you guys feel like you have a clear first choice and you'll be really sad/have to re-evaluate all your other schools if you don't get in?

I'm kinda glad for the "why do you want to go to our school" essays cause they're actually helping me figure out IF I want to go to those schools, but still.

Thoughts?

I actually work in one of the most competitive department in UCSF, and work with the residents and such. Just looking at all those MD students, and I tell myself: yeah, I'll just have a nice and quiet life studying medicine in Nebraska.

Of course, I want to be in UCSF, but I don't try to get my hopes up. I would be pretty bummed out if there's no secondaries. I hope a LizzyM of >70 will get me through the screens.

I dont really have a first choice, because I have only visited 3 schools (wake, UNC, and ECU), but I hope to after the interviews.

I don't really have a first choice either - as of now, I suppose my state school. Tuition is MUCH cheaper and it's the only one I interviewed at and got to see last year. I'm sure Vandy will have me drooling if I get an interview there.

Today was weigh in day and I was down 6 lbs! 🙂🙂🙂🙂 Almost halfway to my goal. 👍 About to do some reading (still have that book I'm supposed to have read by tomorrow for NICU.. haha) and go get a "prize" of some fashion for my hard work.

Yeah, I think it's almost worse when you know the school...because then you can have reasons to have totally fallen in love with it. I've worked at Columbia, Harvard, NYU, and Stanford, and loved them all for different reasons...

but, oh, UCSF....

Sigh. Well, I'm sure once I interview somewhere I'll love that place too so I can't wait!

And hey Gradu8, congratulations on the weigh-in!!

Yeah, I don't really have a top choice at the moment. I think that we'll have a better idea of places after we interview anyway, so I'm trying to withhold myself from judging a school too much. I guess that, as of now, my top choices would be VCU, University of Maryland, Pitt, Penn, NYU, Mt. Sinai, and AECOM. Hopefully I'll get accepted to at least one of them! 😀

I hope everyone had a great (and productive) weekend.

I took a nap this evening and so I had all kinds of crazy energy pent up before I went to bed. Then I got stressed out because I have so many secondaries piled up in my inbox... I just finished two more (UPitt and Mt. Sinai)!

So now, out of 29 schools applied to, I've received 16 secondaries and returned 10. Of the 6 left, 2 (Cornell and Boston) are not bad and are almost completed. The other 4 (VCU, Maryland, Columbia, Georgetown) are going to require a bit more work than the others. At least I'm on my way to being completed! I'm about 1/3 of the way through secondaries already!

And my best friend was having sharp pain in her lower right back - she started vomiting so her mom took her to the ER and she has a "large" kidney stone. 🙁 She has to go back tomorrow to see if they can zap it.

Chad - hope your best friend gets better very soon. Kidney stones are the WORST 🙁🙁🙁

Off to NICU 🙂

Ditto on the well-wishes for your friend Chad. Had a buddy that had to try to pass one. The image the urologist (or whoever) used was trying to force a tic-tac down a coffee stirrer. :scared:

Have fun in the NICU gradu8! Wish I look forward to Mondays as much as you do...

🙁 I'll join in the best wishes bandwagon! I can't even imagine how much that must hurt...it's a good thing there are DOCTORS to fix such things 😀

And congrats on the secondary progress!

I applied to 29 too, although I gave up on one cause I'm realizing that I don't really feel strongly about it so I'm down to 28....and I've only received 11 so far (10 if you don't count Mayo's request for cash), finished 10 of them...still have to write the "educational timeline" essay for BU.

I'm wishing the other schools would hurry up and send their secondaries, cause I feel like I'm gonna lose my momentum soon. And yes, Columbia and Georgetown were a huge pain.

I also had a dream that I got into one of my top choices on my birthday (like, they'd timed the phone call on purpose so they'd tell me on my birthday). My birthday is November 5th, so it COULD happen...

Anyways, good luck all! Hope we get some more secondaries soon...

Thanks for the well wishes, guys! She's at the urologist now trying to get it zapped. I hope she gets better soon.

I accidentally slept in today, so I'm just going to work from home. I have an article I have to write a review on anyway. Maybe I can work on some secondaries too!

Man, I wish I could work from home some days. Unfortunately, the hospital won't come to me. 🙁

A day of firsts at the hospital...

My first vag. delivery...
My first time to observe a intubation
My first time to... BAG!! HECK yes I got to bag that baby!! AMAZING.
My first time to observe umbilical lines. And yes, I got to hold the hemostats 🙂🙂

It was an INCREDIBLE morning. THe NICU is very very busy, 8 beds filled and another preemie on the way today. It was hectic, but fun. The nurses know me now, so they let me help a lot with the kiddos.

Besides the migraine I've been plagued with this afternoon, today was a day for the record books. 👍

Awww I want your job!! Minus the deliveries...I don't think I'm quite mature enough not to think "that's kind of gross." 🙄

Nevertheless, your job is FAR more fun than mine. I spent the day compulsively checking to see if I'm complete anywhere else (I'm not), hoping to get a new secondary (I didn't) and looking up iPhone 3G reviews to determine whether it's worth it for me to get it (it's not).

Later on, though, I'm going to the shooting range for a while to get rid of some of this stress. It's a new hobby for me, and a weird one (I'm pretty far on the liberal side, and a fan of gun control laws) but it's quite cathartic, and I like how you just focus on what you're doing and all the chaos in your mind just kind of disappears. Like singing, kind of.

What is everyone else up to?

My non medical summer job is awful... I just don't see that i'm changing the world by giving anyone information about their financial aid. But it was just a summer job and it's almost over. I'll be back in admissions soon, and that means more hospital time (at both hospitals).

It's kind-of cool that I work on "mom" end at one hospital (L&D, OR, Post-Partum, High Risk) and "baby" end at the other... I get experience in prenatal, antenatal, and postnatal care. I prefer the little ones, but the prenatal experience is great too.

Tomorrow I'm at the other hospital doing High Risk Clinic and possibly deliveries. And as far as the eww factor goes - it's not nearly as bad as you'd think. 🙂

Wow, gradu8in, seems like this is turning into an awesome experience! Congrats!

My friend went to the urologist today to see about her kidney stone, and they said it was too small to be zapped and they want her to try to pass it on her own. It's 2 mm x 5 mm - I can't even imagine having something like that pass through my ureter. :scared: They wrote her a prescription for demerol so she's been pretty drugged up all day. I hope she passes the stone soon.

In other news, it's my birthday today (7/15). :hardy: I'm going out to dinner with my family tonight and with my friends tomorrow night. 😀

Yeah man, happy birthday!

See if you can score some of that Demerol. Or cake. Cake's good too. 😉

Thanks guys! I'm having Banana Cream Cake from Ukrop's tonight (if you're from central Virginia, you'll know exactly what Ukrop's is!)

I got two birthday presents already - secondaries from Tufts and Vermont. If only they would waive the application fee for my birthday...

Only one way to find out. Mail in a copy of your driver's license with the DOB circled instead of a check and see what happens.

Im all caught up with secondaries, and now I have no idea what to do!?!?!?! Lol

I wish I could do what you did. 😛
Hold me too this chubs...I have to get all 22 secondaries done by monday morning.
hahah You better gtf off of SDN then!!!

I am actually proud of myself, usually I procrastinate, but I got most of the secondaries out within 24 hours, except for creighton-3 days, and UKy-2+ weeks.

Sigh....I guess I can't escape the infernal educational timeline...

I am paralyzed by this question. I have had the rest of the app done for a week, done several other secondaries in the meantime, and am avoiding this like the plague. BLECH. I feel your pain.

Very nice! Did you do them in any particular order, or just as they come?
Just as the came, for the most part. I did put Uky and UCF on the backburners though. They had alot of essays, and my chances at them probably arent great.

Sigh....I guess I can't escape the infernal educational timeline...

I've been stuck on that question since Friday too. I wrote something, but it just didn't turn out right. I'm going to have to try to fix it tonight. I want to get that one out of the way so I can focus on the other four toughies I have.

Happy birthday chad!

Today was fun... went into surgery for dermoid tumors (turned into a cancer case/complete hysterectomy), a vag delivery (on the Mom's end), and clinic. Good times. It was my lengthiest OR stay (about three hours) and I did quite well. For those of you who haven't seen dermoids, they are scary looking... Hair, teeth, thyroid hormones.... weeeeird stuff! Uber cool!

I'm wore out and (unfortunately) have to go back to my real job tomorrow. It's been fun 🙂

IM BACK!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Wassup 2013! How is everybody doing? I am great now that I got my computer back. Still waiting in line to get verifiied, hope it comes soon! God bless!

Niiice!

Today, I spent the morning shadowing a physician who specializes in bone marrow transplantation. One patient's reaction during her bone marrow biopsy makes me grateful for the general anesthetic they give surgery patients. Then, I went over to vascular surgery to work on my research stuff and watched a first rib resection this afternoon. The rib was pressing on the subclavian vein. I've seen one of these cases before, but that time it was pressing on the brachial plexes. I'm still a little scared of bonesaws - definitely no ortho for me. But, I guess I'll have to get over it if I'm ever considering CT surg.

Pffft, I wont be too devastated if I dont get into my number 1 (dartmouth), but I wouldn't be too upset if I didn't get into any med school this year:laugh:.

Oh? Why's that?

I think im only meh competitive. I've got a 29Q and a 3.7 BCPM, have a decent amount of clinical experience, and i'm a florida resident. But I dont feel like my odds of getting in are too good so I'm refusing to build my hopes up.

Fair enough. That's what I tried to do last cycle. Didn't work so well. 🙁

Yeah, i'm sure it'll happen to me. I've got a lot of stuff working for me, but I feel like I really needed a higher MCAT. The mother ****** 29 is killing me:laugh:. Oh well, i'll have my revenge on the MCAT if I dont get in this year.

Whoo hoo, just submitted another secondary. Finally finished that optional "narrative educational timeline" question for Boston University. I've been incredibly productive the past few days. I've submitted 6 secondaries in the past 48 hours, and I'm basically halfway done with secondaries (14/29 submitted). They haven't been bad thus far (except for the wallet 🙁) but the last four that I've received are pretty killer (VCU, Georgetown, Maryland, Columbia). Hopefully I can finish the rest of these by early next week. I've got to get rolling because my LORs are going out Thursday! Can't wait to be complete at a few schools!

My committee letter wont be done for about two weeks. You think I should just go ahead and submit the secondaries now?

I would, just to get them out of the way. If you do, your apps will be complete as soon as the schools get your committee letter.

Seconded. If you can get them done, then you don't have to worry about anything.

Fun! Ortho isn't for me either. Ughh.
