Class of 2013!!!

WOW, UCLA is just WOW! They did not have any presentations to make you wanna come, but I got to meet the Chancellor of the Med School, and my interviewer started the Pediatric Surgery program at UCLA. I got grilled about healthcare. The tourguides know that LA does not advertise itself, but, they were really enthusiastic, so it was nice!
For my interview, Apparently I made the mistake of saying that healthcare is a right, and not a privilege. So I got asked hypotheticals about who should get treatment that is government funded. He also asked a lot of questions about how stuff was like in India, and I was thinking, UHH I dunno? Then he proceeded to ask me about arranged marriage, and the caste system... But I have enough anecdotal evidence to support my views, so hopefully I did okay. Plus he was Norwegian, so he does not know if I made anything up...

I've been so anxious lately knowing that I will find out soon that I gave into my pesky ways and called the admissions office today to ask if any decision letters had been mailed. I was told some HAD been mailed, but depending on the type of decision (I don't know if she might have slipped up in telling me this, but it drove me even more crazy!).

Then she asked for my AMCAS ID and put me on hold, then came back and informed me that my decision letter was mailed out today. I tried asking her what type of decisions were the ones mailed, but she knew what I was alluding to (ok, so I'm not that slick!!!)

Do you guys think this means something bad? I'm thinking its probably either a flat out rejection or (hopefully) an acceptance. Maybe it could be a waitlist...but if they came up with a decision so quickly, maybe not.

If any of you have any knowledge or experience that will shed some light on which possible decision it could be, one way or another, please help!

Ooh, good luck with the decision! I would doubt it would be a waitlist this early. I mean, I figure a waitlist is like saying, out of a class of 100, you're ranked at most 101. Schools haven't even seen all the candidates yet this cycle, so I doubt they can rank you THAT specifically.

As far as rejection, a September interview is a very positive sign from any school. Seems to me something bad or very unfortunate would need to happen for a school to go straight rejection from there. The type of thing you'd probably be able to remember very specifically.

Seems to me the option for the school was really to accept and send a letter right away, or to put on hold and offer no decision right now. I'd say a letter potentially holds good news. Good luck with that!

(You can tell I was in a very similar situation, seeing how much I've thought this through)

I KNOW. Baylor is so inexpensive. Pretty nice. Inexpensive is hugely important to me.

Hahah yeah. I got my news in lab. I ran around the lab screaming "holy ****" with 5 grad students staring at me and laughing. After 10 mins of this, I yell: "I have to call my mom!!!" 😳

We have to celebrate, pianola!!!

There is nothing wrong with that at all. If not for my parents, I would not be able to apply at all. Plus my dad proofread 90% of my secondaries, and considering the amount I did, that is a lot.

I'm about to move back in with my parents to save money until school starts in August. Or in with my dad I should say. Mom still stays at their house on the coast most of the time because she works down there.

No rent means saved money for a nicer place to live at med school.

Same here on both counts. Without parents I would not be able to apply. And my mom read 100% of my secondaries + AMCAS. I'm totally grateful to them for their help and love.

[Only I have an unspoken curfew that a high schooler wouldn't envy 👎.]

When I am at home, my curfew is sunset...😱 I do not think you can beat that...
 
^I think I have met my California twin. My curfew is about where yours is. I get called by my parents if I'm out at 8pm...I did today, that's for sure.

I hear ya on that. Living with the 'rents is one of those things you love to hate. I mean, I'm saving a ridiculous amount of money here, but I can't exactly have people over whenever I want. I mean, my parents are kind of getting to be "old people."
 
VCU interview!!!!! No MD acceptances yet, but five interviews isn't so bad.

Ha, thanks. That's actually a fairly famous photograph. The baby's name is Samuel Armas... it was one of the most famous fetal surgeries.

Declining interviews makes me really sad 🙁 Bye-bye USC. I wish I had the chance to visit old college friends (I did my UG degree near USC).
 
Since everybody in here has had a successful interview and an acceptance in hand, I was wondering if you guys and gals could help me with prep for my interview seeing as how this is my first one. I wanted to know what you think I should do and what I should research? Did most people's interviewers grill you or were they more interested in getting to know you? I want to charm their socks off but I also want them to know that I have a good working knowledge of this thing we call healthcare, you know. Thank you again and God bless!

BD2B...flaahless gave me the best advice when I asked him about interviewing. Just be yourself! You're a really nice guy that's obviously interested in medicine, loves the UCLA Drew program, and will make a great doctor. Just show the interviewer that!

I've had over 10 interviewers so far and only one grilled me...most are interested in getting to know you. But, the grilling isn't necessarily a bad thing! Just keep your cool and you'll be fine. I think the best way to prep is read through all your essays (amcas, secondary, etc), know everything about the school (very important...also make sure you have a good answer to why this school), and have a very basic knowledge of healthcare/life of a doctor.

In the end, just show them you're a sweet guy and I'm sure you'll get accepted.
 
Ohh and read through the Interview database. You're not going to be asked the same questions because each interviewer has a different style...but it does give you an idea about what they're interested in talking about.

Totally agree. I also would be as honest as possible- they can smell BS from a mile away. Be humble (nothing worse than arrogance...). And yeah, be yourself!! Don't underestimate the importance of being a charming, excited, passionate person. Being professional is all well and good, but the more excited you are about the program and medicine itself, the more excited the interviewer will be about having you there (it's infectious!). Smile a lot. Go over your AMCAS activities and think about things like, why did you do it? What did you get out of it? How did it help you get where you are now? Also, always have questions to ask. You'll do so great!!!

I hear ya Berk! I just really want to get in!!! But I know you know that. I plan on being nothing but myself and showing them who I am in the flesh! What websites are the best ones to help me with the basics for healthcare?

Yeah!!! Exactly. Just be nice, screw professionalism! Always smile, crack a few jokes, and just tell the interviewer that you love medicine/the school.

When I say basics, I mean BASIC! Just read wikipedia, watch a few youtubes of Obama and McCain talking about healthcare, and you're golden. It's not as big of a deal as everyone makes it out to be. I mean...if you wanted to, the interviewer would talk with you about it forever. Which reminds me, you lead the discussion during the interview. Keep it under your control. If you're not comfortable with the topic being discussed, then change it. And make sure you're always talking about the positive aspects of your app. You don't want the interviewer to have any negative thoughts about you.

pianola's unofficial interview advice
(1) Stay with a student if you possibly can. If you live too close to stay with a student, try to meet some students and find out what they LIKE about the curriculum.

(2) Wikipedia + MSAR --> use them for sure 🙂

(3) No one grilled me in any way, shape, or form. I hope you have the same experience.

(4) Use the SDN interview feedback. Healthcare may not come up at all in your discussion.

(5) Say what you LIKE about the school. Do not leave the interview room before you have said what you like about the school.
