Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Thank you Berk, LET, Pianola for all of your help! You all are too good to me. It is really a blessing to be around people like yall! I can't wait to be a part of 2013 with yall! I am really excited about this interview. God bless!

Definitely hoping you hear good news, BD2B. 😀

Also, do read all the interview feedback, and think about your answers... Often, they ARE the same questions! Don't worry, BD, you've got this one!

Declining interviews makes me really sad 🙁 Bye-bye USC. I wish I had the chance to visit old college friends (I did my UG degree near USC).

Eww... USC... I cannot bring myself to complete their secondary...

Yeah. I just want to see my old friends again. It's been over a year since I visited California and my best friend's in law school at UCLA...🙁

No idea how I finished their secondary, btw.

I'm so excited for you too bd!! yeah, I wasn't grilled by any of my interviewers either. student hosts are fun. you're definitely gonna be nervous but just know the most asked questions and a basic answer (no memorization, don't wanna look rehearsed) and let God do His work. He will produce what He wants you to say!!

Goooooooooo BD! 🙂

BlackDr2b,

I used www.kff.org and just skimmed the summaries of the current healthcare topics. Good luck at UCLA!

Haha, November? That's nothing...

I'm waiting until March to hear from my first choice (Columbia... 🙄)
Sucks eh? I know exactly how you feel. Most of my top choices are non-rolling....

I'm in the same boat... After my interview I was put under "active consideration" at one of my top choices and they said they would make a decision anytime from now until March. 🙁

And I thought after Oct. 15th this waiting game would be over! I was soooo wrong...

I hear ya Berk! I just really want to get in!!! But I know you know that. I plan on being nothing but myself and showing them who I am in the flesh! What websites are the best ones to help me with the basics for healthcare?
Did you get my PM with a link to that book "The Medical School Interview" by Jeremiah Fleenor, MD, MBA? I was recommended it by a member. I read it tonight, thoroughly enjoyed it, and found it to be very beneficial. I'd highly suggest checking it out.

OK, for those of you with acceptances: It seems that the only things schools love to do more than reject people is to waitlist them. Last year, my best friend had 3 acceptances for 12 waitlists.

My question: What is the latest date that you would change your mind about which school you were going to IF you found out you were getting off a waitlist? If you got off the waitlist May 15th would you go? May 30th? June 15th? Later than that?

If it were my top choice (Columbia), I would go if they called me the day that classes started and I needed to be there within hours.

I think it depends entirely on the schools. I loved the school I've gotten into so I doubt I'd pick another school over it anyway, and if I were to get waitlisted at one of the few schools I would actually even consider going to over Vandy I'd probably stay on there until June-ish, but in the meanwhile I'd be apartment-hunting and getting ready to go to Vandy.

If I hadn't gotten into one of my top choices, though, I'd probably stick to the waitlist until as late as July or August.

Hm. Good thoughts. I was thinking I'll stay on any waitlists until some point in June. Thanks for your thoughts, guys.

Heh, Chad, I hope you hear good things from Columbia 🙂 And when you do please tell them I would like to come visit the area 😀.

LET, I know what you mean about getting into a top choice. I feel like I'm more or less happy with my acceptances right now and any other acceptances would be nice, but not necessary for me to be happy.

Honestly, I have a hard time with this one. I love the idea of having so long to prepare, but IF I wasn't already at my first choice, I think I'd make a decision by April or May at the VERY latest. I planned on moving by July 1st to be settled. Personally, I've already decided not to interview anywhere else, and I will withdraw from even my waitlist by January or February.

Last year, when I didn't have ANY acceptances, I would've obviously gone the first day of class. But with an acceptance, I would decide by early summer. If the situation was reversed and I was waitlisted at my first one instead of the one I'm at and accepted at the other, I'd probably wait til June (since my waitlist school was my least favorite). Did that make any sense?

Did that make any sense?

Yes, absolutely. The problem is, I haven't exactly ranked my schools, so right now they're all sort of my top choices 😛. I'm happy with my current acceptances and I'd be happy with others, too. At some point, though, I will have to figure out who is worth waiting on and who isn't...

Well, I think sitting down and ranking the schools you've gotten into/ been waitlisted at would be a pretty useful thing to do. Obviously it's pointless for schools you haven't heard back from, but for ones you know you have a real shot at getting into, it might be a good idea. That way you can be ready to make decisions quickly if and when those decisions have to be made. Obviously there's no REAL way to rank them, but you could write down impressions from your interviews and about the curriculum.

Good idea. I think I'll do that today.

I think that point is called May 15th  (for the acceptances)

Well, I see your point actually, you'll have to pare down your acceptances to one... But then you'll have to use that one acceptance left and compare it to the other WL schools. And wait. It also depends on how important being settled is to you. My GF is going to have to wait to move anyway, and I can fly by the seat of my pants, so a last minute decision is OK by me.

I guess that's a good problem to have. :meanie:

Yeah, exactly. I mean, ideally, I'd really very much like to get an apartment in the area I'll be living in by the end of May. I want to get a good deal and get used to living in the area before I start med school (unless I continue to live at home...).

Does anyone know how early you can move into student housing at med schools? Is it like undergrad where you can only move in like a week before classes start? Specifically, I'm curious about NYMC, Columbia, and AECOM.

^My best friend goes to Columbia (yes the one with all the waitlists). Chad, I'll ask him if I see him on-line...

But that's the problem..... how do you even start ranking them?? I leave every school impressed with it and seeing myself very happy there! I get home and read all the literature and they are ALL places I could be very, very happy at and get a very good education. If I were forced to pick among my acceptances right now, I would have to play eenie-meenie-miney moe... the "rankings" change every day! How did you guys go about doing this?
Of course there's one school that might make all this moot......😍

That's how I ranked. Get this one, your decision will be easy 😀

Yeah, but then you're in trouble if it doesn't pan out.

Of course, being member of the "Class of 2013" thread is good luck, so that shouldn't be a problem!

Oh, and I got a pro and a con today.

Con: A job I applied for told me they were interested in me, but since I would be starting med school in 10 months they didn't want to hire me. 🙁

Pro: I got my second acceptance! 😀

Yeah it's definitely really hard to rank schools. I had to remind myself that I would really like pretty much all of them to some extent because I want to go to med school, and hey, they're med schools, so they'll all study the stuff I want to study and have the kinds of professors I'd like to work with. Plus, if I applied there, chances are there was something about the school that I liked.

I think the deal is that you have to avoid the "hey, its a med school! Med school is awesome! Therefore this school is awesome!" mentality. You can get an amazing education at any US M.D. school (after all, it is what you make of it, and YOU make yourself into a good doctor, no school will do that for you). So what I think about is this:

- How did it "feel"? How were the students? Did they seem happy? Did they seek out interviewees and tried to be helpful? Do they have a life outside of school? Are they supportive or do they seem kind of competitive and intense? How was the administration? Did they seem supportive and nice? Were your interviewers nice? Did they seem excited about the school?

- How was the campus and the location? Is it somewhere you can imagine yourself for 4 years? Is it close to home (if you're into that sort of thing) or easily reachable (i.e. is there an airport nearby)? Is the campus too rural/too urban? How are the facilities? Do lecture halls look super-cramped or are they nice? The library? Is there housing/ how is the housing? Are apartments in the area expensive? Is it easy to navigate on foot or do you need a car (gas = expensive, students = poor)? Are you totally isolated or is there stuff around it? Is the area sketchy?

- Do they focus more on research or primary care, and does that focus work for you? Is it more lecture-based or small-group based? How much PBL is there? How many hours do students typically spend in lecture? How easy is it to get notes from the lectures if you don't feel like going (are they online, is there a scribe program, are they podcasted, videocasted?). How is the curriculum set up? Is it in blocks, or do you have a bunch of classes at once? How much support is there if you're having trouble with your classes? How often are students tested? What is the grading scheme?

- How are the hospitals? Remember you'll probably do most of your clinicals there. Is the patient population diverse?

etc etc. Anyways, these are the things I think about when I start analyzing schools....

Congratulations LFW!!! And to think a few weeks ago you were worried about not getting accepted to med school?!

Hey bison!!! Or should I say...bruin?

OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO, I just might be a bruin uh? I like the way that sounds! 😀 You might be a bruin too! If UCLA would quit trippin and shpw my girl some love!

Doing great, thanks. 🙂 I will be thinking good thoughts for you on 11/15.

Thank you very much Pianola! I greatly appreciate any good thoughts I can get. Any interviews for you coming up or are you set on where you want to go?

Haha I know! Yell at them for me. Tell them you'll walk if they don't interview me! Wait...I don't want you to do that. After you're accepted...then you can yell 😉

I rescheduled Emory for the end of the semester and withdrew from a lot of places. I'm not sure if I'll hear from my last 5 schools. They were very much reach schools.

By the end of this month, I'll have a pretty good idea of where I stand wrt the schools at which I've already interviewed and probably a good idea of where I'm headed, I guess.

Mostly, I'm just trying to have the energy to finish up this semester and make it through another semester. I can't believe after being accepted I have to wait almost an entire calendar year to start medical school -- I shouldn't complain but it's just tiring, that's all.

chad, columbia's your top choice too? man, waiting until march will kinda suck..

whee! im so proud of the class of 2013.. and we got a cool graduation year too!

Hahaha! As soon as I get accepted I will give them a call and let them have it!
