Hi guys! I am feeling decidedly in need of a good whine sesh, so bear with me.

LET's holiday home-going saga:

So today, 12/21, I was supposed to leave San Franscisco to go to NY to my mom's house, where my entire family currently is. I was feeling really happy because so many flights have been canceled in the past week due to inclement weather in the East Coast, but this weekend things have calmed down a bit and there are flights available. I worked all weekend, taking the 7 am patient visits no one wants, so I could take a 2 week vacation, so I'm super sleep-deprived, but I figured hey, at least I can sleep on the plane.

So off I go to SFO (san francisco airport), filled with hope and happiness. My flight to NYC was supposed to leave at 3:30 pm and I'm at the airport at 1:00. I check in and they tell me the flight "might be a little delayed" due to weather conditions. I shrug and figure it'll be ok, I'll just have my family pick me up a bit later. I check in a suitcase and, carrying my huge and very heavy second suitcase (which is just small enough to be a carry-on), my laptop bag, and my purse, I go to the gate. When I get there, I see that the computer thingy says the flight is not leaving until 8 pm. I'm frustrated at the idea of having to sit in the airport for 5 hours but hey, at least I get to go home. I call my family and tell them I'll be home at 5 am, east coast time.

5 minutes later, I look up at the computer thingy again and I notice it says "cancelled". I run to the Continental information counter, where I proceed to stand in like for 45 minutes. I call my mom to ask her to look up other flights leaving from SFO tonight JUST IN CASE. She calls me back. Absolutely everything in the world is full (it's Christmas, after all!). I get to the counter and the lady says "we canceled the flight because the pilot has been working over 10 hours and it's against the law for him to fly again. He needs to nap. We have no other flights. The earliest flight we can get you on is leaving on the 24th, you'd arrive in the east coast at 10 pm". So I'm like, wait, you want me to find someone to pick me up at 10 pm on Christmas eve? I panic.

I take out my laptop and figure out that there's another flight leaving from SFO on Virgin America at 7:00 am, and there's one seat left, in the "preferred area", for basically 3 times as much as I had originally paid for the continental flight. I take it, spending my entire work christmas bonus on it. I go back to the continental ticket counter and she tells me I have to go get my checked bag. Fine. Off I go to baggage claim to get my suitcase. At this point, I call my mom to tell her the situation. She tells me that I should try to get on stand-by for TONIGHT'S virgin america flight, which is already full. I figure, hey that makes sense, after all I have 14 hours until my flight. I leave the gate and go to the virgin america check-in counter.

I get to check-in with all my bags and suitcases, and they tell me that I can't be on stand-by because my flight is leaving <24 hours from tonight's flight. So I'm like, ok, well I guess I'm gonna go sleep in the gate somewhere, let me just check my bag so I can at least not have to carry around my suitcase. Nope, you can't check your bag for a flight that's 12 hours from now. So what can I do? You can sit here in the terminal, ma'am.


So here I am. It is 5:45 pm, I have 2 suitcases and 2 bags, I am sleep-deprived from working the whole weekend, and I have to wait 12 hours until I can even go to the gate. Oh, and I spent all of my Christmas money on this ticket for tomorrow.

And hey, by the way, complain up a storm. I bet you can get some money back. Just don't get arrested while yelling or whatever, because hey, it is an airport.
 
Oh no! That's terrible. You should have been like "Umm, I don't know if you knew this or not...but I'm an SDN supastar with powerful pre-med friends...get me on the next flight STAT...with free upgrade to first class! ...also, watch my bags while I go fight evil monkey crime for a little bit with my other two animated sisters!!"

Lame attempt at humor on my part, I'm pretty sure you actually are an SDN superstar though, whatever that means 🙂. But I hope things turn out ok for you. Maybe you could go to one of those little stands at the airport that rents out dvd's and watch a comedy or two to help you feel a little better. 🙂Have a safe trip home! :luck:

FAFSA has been brooding on my mind as well. Will probably look around in fin aid or start a thread about some of my loan questions....like do Ugrad loans get deferred during med school? and do we send out the FAFSA to every school you applied to?

Macauly looks creepy as an adult. In my mind he will forever be the little boy in Home Alone.

I have no clue where to even start with the Fafsa & all the questions I have. I'm going to make an appointment with a counselor at the closest school I've been accepted to and figure out my options. Deferring loans during med school will depend on what kind of loans you took out.

It's goin'. Still stressing over my grades from this last semester, but i've kinda made peace that i can't affect them at this point; they should come out tomorrow or Tuesday, and then I'll know if I've got any explaining to do to my schools- crossing my fingers big-time:xf:.

In any case, i'm LOVING the fact that i can just randomly take a 3 hour nap in the afternoon, even if i got 7 hours of sleep the night before! Christmas break is always my favorite- it's short enough that you don't have to feel like you have to be "doing" anything. 🙂 Also, definitely nice to have time to make plans with friends i haven't seen all semester because of studying/interviewing/whatever... and honestly, it's been nice to get to drink an inapropriate amount without having to worry about studying later 😀 I could count on one finger the number of drinks i had since September before this last week just cuz i've been so busy.

So in sum, it's nice to have my life back. 🙂 Anyone else wanna report on good times had over the break so far?

Howdy y'all! I need to practice on my Texan accent since I have given up on getting into another school.... thanks for killing my dreams Pitt!😡

I am tired from back to back parties...err family parties and playing with babies... I realize that I am pretty good with children, but I only like nice non sick kids... not snot nosed brats...🙄 At least it is nice to know that children don't hate me😀

Good news is that my sister is back from Virginia, and it is lots of family time and veg ing out. And I am done with parties for this break, and no holidays to celebrate, so lots of R& R.

Good luck LET, I can't wait to fill out FAFSA 🙂rolleyes🙂 and I am not looking forward to seeing my grades this quarter either Spurs...I just hope I do not lose magna...

Oh and pianola, it sucks that I could not stay in NYC long enough to meet you, but I was glad to be back home. I am glad that you had a good time at your interviews.

Did I miss the part where you chose you like UTSW over Maryland over the last few days of sleep I've had? Not that I'm not happy, I just didn't realize the decision had been made 🙂

Right now it is at 90% Chance, but I will wait and see what FAFSA says... but unless they give me a full ride, which usually never happens, I am headed out east... wow that is the first time someone references going to Texas as going out east :laugh:... And there is the 1 in infinity chance that I get into UCLA, which would change everything up...
 
LET, you should've called me! I'm at my parents house 15 min from SFO, and you could've hung out here instead of at the airport... Did you get on the flight...?

Haha well mine will not be coffee, I'm trying to wean myself off the stuff after finals (seriously getting the withdrawal headaches and everything!).

Did anybody do anything fun this past weekend? I have been officially snowed in for the last 4 days and counting. Its supposed to snow all next week too 🙁
 
I'll join in on the depressing xmas traveling stories!! (PS, LET that sucks!!!!)

So, yesterday I went snowboarding with a high school friend and his good buddy, who i just met for the first time. Checked the weather and all was clear, but chains were required for the mountain so i had to buy chains for 40 bucks cuz the ones we had at the house were too big for my tires. Fine, whatever. We leave at 515am and figure we'll be arriving around 8am to start the snowboarding day. Getting to the mountain was fine, but as soon as we got on to the mountain, its a one lane road and it was DEAD stopped. CHP had a check point to make sure everyone had on chains, and it took like 3 hours to go maybe 30 miles. As we near the check point, i notice my hood starts to smoke, so I pull over and check things out (i dont realy konw what im looking for), but my friends say I burned out my clutch, and they were right.

I drive past the check point and a few miles after I cant catch any gear, and I am stuck on the one way lane with my hazards on with no way to move. We sit there about 5 min and try to move again and somehow my clutch started workin and i was able to finish the drive up to the resort. So it seems like ill be able to make it back home and just go to the dealership when I get back to San Diego. So we snowboard for the day and leave around 430 pm, finally make it to the point down the hill where I dont need chains, so I pull over to take them off and find out that the right chain fell off at some point and is gone. Great, 40 bucks down the drain.

Make it downt he mountain and the clutch seems fine, so we stop for thai food (yummy). When we leave thai food I get on the freeway and start having clutch problems again. I cant get past 45 miles an hour, but im in the slow lane of the freeway so i put my hazards on. I stay on the freeway cuz i'm trying to get the car to catch (and i think it will). In the meantime, a cop comes up behind me and follows me as I exit the freeway. He ends up giving me a ticket for impeding traffic and driving with my hazards on (apparently thats illegal 😕). So thats lame.

We are about 115 miles a way from home, and my car doesnt work. To top it off, we are in a sh*tty ass neighborhood (vice city status) and its late at night. We pulled into a 7-11 (after driving around at 10 mph looking for a well lit area to stop) and theres a pimp and his hooker outside, somoene getting arrested across the street, and sirens and police cars driving by every 5 minutes. I end up calling a tow truck to take my car to the nearest Subaru dealership, and my friends calls his dad to drive 2 hours to come pick us up. In the meantime, we take a cab to a near by Days Inn and hang out in the lobby until his Dad arrives (we got the heck away from the 7-11).

In conclusion, his dad finally arrives and we drive back home, getting back in San Diego at nearly 4 in the morning. And of course, I have to drive back the 2 hours later in the week to go pick up my Subaru which apparently needs a brand new clutch and who konws what else. God konws how much that is going to cost.

And that is My Snowboard Trip from Hell 2008.

hmm I'm still holding out to hear from some other schools, but it looks very good that Cornell will be my pick. I honestly didn't think I would get any NYC schools & I'm definitely leaning towards staying closer to home... but idk the thought of being your classmate at Howard makes me hesitate! I'm not really prepared for this i wasn't expecting it so we shall see!
 
Pretty epic story man. That's terrible luck. What kind of subie do you drive?
I like the vice city reference...brought me back to my high school ps2 days!

Haha I think the cider, since the tea ones sound like they still probably have caffeine in them which won't help 😛

2007 impreza wrx (not an sti). Looks just like this, same color, but doesnt have that huge spoiler (it has the smaller one). I'll enjoy it for this last year (i'm leasing it). dont think itll be worth the car payment during med school, let alone the fact that i wont be able to afford it.

Nice ride!! Sucks you won't be keeping it. That's really strange your clutch gave out since its such a new car, and Subaru's have a good rep for quality. Too much street racing or something? 😉

I know! I was thinking the same thing. I live 30 mins from the airport, but I would have picked you up. Sleeping in the airport is not fun. I'm sorry LET 🙁 But you'll be at home soon enough!

Yea it was really weird. Luckily, I'm pretty sure its still under warranty (at least I hope). I'lll try and play it cool with the street racing, at least for a little while 😀. (i dont actually street race).

I want my medical school email address, my white coat, books, instruments, and to be in medical school. But it is only December Why can't I start in January instead of September.

Ohh nyquil works like a charm! But I only use nyquil if I'm actually sick.
