Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I tried doing my taxes on Saturday but I think I was doing something wrong because TurboTax was projecting that I owed them money (both state and federal) so I'm going to do them over again this weekend.

I saw my W2 last night and realized how much I put in this year, I"ll be getting a good chunk back! 😍

So now that im pretty much done with this cycle...do you think it would be unethical to have interfolio send my LORs to my house??? Im kind of curious to see what my professors said about me.

haha you shouldnt be happy with that...you lost out on months of use for that money...Think of all the interest you could have made on it.

Can you do the 1040EZ or are you claiming deductions?

I did the EZ and probably still will, but I just think I should take a closer look in case I missed something.

If your letters were marked confidential (most of the time they are), Interfolio won't release them to you.

Wouldn't this make it unethical? If you can't get them for yourself, doesn't changing the information (ie: giving a fake name/friends name/address), make it wrong?
I guess...I just figured since it doesnt really matter at this point and since im really curious to see what my professors think of me.

I would just recommend filling out the form yourself without using TurboTax. It's really pretty simple... I did mine in about 10 minutes.

But then you don't know how much you will get back or how much you owe until they process it right?

Can I ever see my confidential letters of recommendation?

In accordance with the Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act of 1974, Interfolio maintains the confidentiality of all closed letters of recommendation our file holders store with us. We follow strict guidelines for receiving and mailing all closed letters of recommendation to ensure that confidential documents stay that way. Account holders are notified when we receive letters of recommendation on their behalf, and have the ability to select it in a mailing to a potential graduate school or employer. Account holders will not, however, have the ability to view the document at any point in time.

That's the answer given by Interfolio's HelpCenter.

So, um. I filed my taxes on Sunday. I received a new W2 on Monday.

Halp?!

👍 Nice find, thanks

dang

But then you don't know how much you will get back or how much you owe until they process it right?

No... that's why you fill out the form. It walks you through the calculations step by step to determine if you paid enough tax for the money you earned. If you overpaid, you get a refund. If you underpaid, you owe money. After doing my 1040EZ I now know that I overpaid my federal income tax by exactly $417.53.

Why did you do your taxes if you hadn't received all of your W2's?

I guess you'll have to file an amendment but I'm not sure how that works...

I'd forgotten that I worked there after the new year. Unfortunately, it's a value in kilodollars, so uh. Yeah. Amendment. x.x;

SHEMARTY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are You probably going to UCSF? I mean provided no other better financial options.

I dont know if this is universal, but I got an email from UNC recently that said that in order to get maximum consideration for Financial Aid...Fafsa should be sent in by feb 15th!...12 days!!

"If you are applying for financial aid for the 2009-10 academic year, you should complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). March 1st is the financial aid priority deadline for filing the FAFSA. Use estimated figures, if necessary, to meet the March 1st priority-filing deadline. The FAFSA must be mailed by February 15th to meet the March 1st deadline."

So you might have till march 1st if you do it electronically.

Wow....

My Dad said that his financial information from all of his investments is not available yet, and he doesn't know when it'll be ready.

Looks like I'll be doing the FAFSA with estimated numbers until his taxes come through. I hope this doesn't screw my finaid over.

Of my current options, I'm probably going to UCSF. I still need to compare UCSF and UCLA, though. I don't want to pick UCSF solely because it's closer to home.

I'm also waiting on some non-rolling decisions in March. There are a few that would give UCSF a run for its money.

But right now, I can say that if I don't get into anywhere else, I'm ecstatic to be going to UCSF!

(whereas before UCSF, I was still stressed and waiting because I wanted the option to stay in the Bay Area, even if I don't end up taking that option)

where do you guys find this info? I'm so clueless with my Fafsa & apparently my parents are just as clueless as me. I hope I don't get royally screwed.

Well UNC emailed me twice...the other schools havent really been as straightforward but its probably somewhere in the acceptance package or online.

UMC emailed me, it was in my interview package, acceptance package, and it's on the website under accepted applicants.

I'm clueless when it comes to loans tho... they want me to fill out an entrance interview (and I worked in finaid for a while this summer, so I do know what one is...) on wellsfargo or nelliemae's site - I want to use wellsfargo, but I can't figure out what to fill out!

Is it "apply now", and should I apply for EACH loan they offer for me (federal stafford, grad plus, and med ex) or just one or 😕.
I emailed the finaid lady. I'm sure I"ll give her a laugh if nothing else.

sigh... my acceptance package was two pages lol: one with no less than 5 sentences congratulating me on my acceptance, the other one of those check yes check no deals

yea I think I might e-mail the financial aid lady for some guidance because I have a feeling my family is doing this all wrong.

Can't hurt. I'd rather ask a ton of questions now and be ontime or early for priority deadlines. I'm sure FinAid feels the same way.
yea. I have a feeling our deadlines aren't until April or May anyway because 95% of the class is accepted in March.

Looonely, I'm so loooonely 🤣

I'm debating if I should go to the gym today. Well, I ShOuLd go, but it is snowing and I am lazy...

whats need access?

"About Need Access
Need Access is a financial aid application offered by Access Group that gathers information from students to determine their eligibility for institutional financial aid. Check our list of Need Access participating schools or ask your financial aid administrator to confirm your school's participation in this service."

Off to the gym! I have finished reading Dreams of My Father and I just started reading Glass Castle. It comes highly recommended. Anyone read it?

Yeah, there's some part of me that keeps thinking "OMG your credit card was late = your credit score now sucks = no money for you for school"

I tried the annualcreditreport thing, the one I pulled didn't even show that card... buttttt.... :scared:
