If I get into Columbia I'm definitely going to open an account with Citibank. There's an ATM right on campus (plus there's one like 5 minutes from my parents house so they can give me money when I'm broke).

Lol, I memorized the location of all the Citibank ATMs in the surrounding area of any internship or job I've ever had. Really comes in handy sometimes 👍

I'm curious why did you fall in love with P&S? I think it is a great place too.

I have SO many reasons.... let's see how many I can name.

  1. Huge performing arts student community. I mean, what other med school has student orgs. like the Bard Hall Players, a cappella groups, choir, orchestra, etc. Not only that, but the administration actually WANTS the students to participate in these endeavors.
  2. Largely Hispanic patient population, which I am passionate about working with. I almost minored in Spanish.
  3. The new curriculum rocks. 1.5 years pre-clinical, 2 years clinical, 6 months scholarly project. Take the USMLE step I 2.5 years in (you already have 1 year clinical at that point). Plus I like the combination of didactic and small group settings (I do better when material is presented to me rather than teaching myself).
  4. Unlimited research opportunities.
  5. Unlimited opportunities for studying abroad & doing away rotations.
  6. Awesome clinical experience.
  7. The students I met were all incredibly enthusiastic. The student body seems like a diverse, talented group of individuals.
  8. NYC. Enough said.
  9. The view from the top of Bard Hall. 🙂
  10. Pass/fail grading in the preclinical years.
Okay, I'm going to stop there - there are many more reasons but I think you get the idea. After coming home from my Columbia interview I realized that if I were to design a med school, it would end up being almost identical to Columbia. I feel like it's the absolute perfect fit for me. 😍

I've got similar reasons. The only thing I am skeptical about is the 1.5 yrs of pre-clinical work. I wonder how that will affect the step 1 average at P&S.

I was one class short of a Spanish minor. We have a Medicine in Spanish group at UMC that I'm really excited about being a part of.

agreed... I went and came back and my gel has migrated about 1 mm....

Sigh, I need to wait either till late Feb or early March for the next round of decisions from UCLA... I know I will get the decision for UVA before then and you guys waiting on Columbia will probably get in before I find out about UCLA...

definitely citibank. i think if you open with a minimum of 500. non-student account no monthly fees if you maintain minimum balance. also, citibank has really good online services, the lowest exchange fees if you go internationally, benefits with their free credit cards and thank you points to get free gifts!

I actually liked running gels during my upper division labs because I could walk out for extended strolls while the gel was running. I had no such opportunities in other labs. Anyway, I bet is does suck when you run them on a daily basis.

Yes this the third time running this gel for the same PCR... And this is a really important experiment and I need to know if I screwed up with loading, or with the PCR or the actual transfection itself... GAH!

After talking with a couple of current second- and third-years, I'm not skeptical at all. Apparently their old curriculum had a lot of repetition (not to mention 9 months of anatomy), so a lot of the redundancies are going to be cut. I was told that other schools who adopted a similar curriculum experienced a 4-5 point jump in their Step I averages.

I hope we both get in! So who all is waiting for Columbia in this thread? I know there's me, Anotherface, pianola, and Druzie... anyone else?

One of the most interesting labs I took was Forensic Molecular Biology lab. The only problem was, it was a 4 hour lab that often went longer, because you'd do 2 minutes of work and then have to wait 30+ minutes for something to run. I got to know my classmates pretty well by the end of the semester.
