i find m,yself oscillating wildly between wanting a dell and a mac funky... lol

I can make the choice for you. Mac FTW! But check with NYU to make sure... some schools are not mac compatible, even if you use the partitioning thing... I forget what it is called at this exact moment...

yeah i dont know what NYU wants yet. what always bothered meabout macs is that i can get the same specs on a dell for cheaper...

Now I love Mac products (LOVE the Ipod Touch!), but I can't wait until I get my new Dell or HP in a few months. I'm just so used to using Windows (and virtually ALL electronic med records systems use it, which I have specific research interest in), that I'm not ready to give it up. I might wait until Windows 7 (is that the next one?) comes out this summer... I'm probably in the minority here though. (plus... much of this is WAY cheaper in PCs as ar mentioned!)

All I REALLY want is a Blu-Ray player/HD capability in my computer - wave of the future baby!
Best Blu-Ray : Dark Knight. Also AMAZING in IMAX. A bit off topic though...

No you'd just be feeding the fire... or as many say around here:

:troll: (which he has earned the status of in pre-allo)
That guy is on a role. None of his recent post have been substantiative, he joined in december, and almost exclusively posts in pre-allo. He is such a troll.

I just got my mac last year in april, so I do not need one... and UTSW is mac compatible (thank god!) so I am set hopefully...
I wish I didn't have to get another laptop yet, but I already have some problems with the one I bought a couple of years ago. For some reason I can only use it when it is plugged into an outlet because the screen goes blank and my wireless card shuts off when I run it on the battery.

Hehe, since my med school is 28K per year cheaper than my sister's I can convince my parents to get me whatever I want...😀

But in all honesty, my parents instilled this mind set into me when I was little... Spend a little extra, and buy something good, rather than buying a whole bunch after every few [insert whatever time interval fits]... you actually save more money this way, IMO...

Ack, that sucks... is it a Sony Vaio? Sorry, I have had a lot of bad experiences with Sony Vaio laptops...

i hear what you are saying funky, but then again I have had my Dell for 6 years now and its STILL working lol. its my primary computer during the week (im home on the weekends and use the computer at home) and while a little slow sometimes and has a relaly loud fan or whatever, it works nicely enough 🙂 oh and it has a 32 gig harddrive. ahah that shoudl tell you just how old it is

Is that always true with laptops? I find that most are hardly functional after 3 or 4 years and that hardware is only top of the line for a few months at a time.

Its a dell.🙁

haha yes, there are flashdrives with more harddrive space lol.
im having so much fun customizing my computer online now. lol i do this from time to time to see how the price changes and if i get a really nice low price, i will tell daddy thats it time 🙂

edit: daddy because its his medical school present to me 🙂 or birthday. or birthday and medical school LOL

Is Windows 7 supposed to be 64-bit only?

If you get a Mac, you won't have any issues, as you can just dual boot with relative ease.👍

The major difference is the price point, though.

Also, 32GB??? I've got over a TB over here.😱

haha i have an external harddrive hooked up, that the 32G is what came with my computer 🙂 andwhen i got it, it was the best gaming computer Dell had (and no i dont play many games lol i just thought it would be a good computer... )

I don't see how I could possibly use a TB (may be if I had a few HD videos)

I was sick of viruses constantly invading my computer, overheating melting my wireless card, and other pc related issues...

Never had any viruses on my Dell, although my friend has had to replace his Mac hard drive 3 times in college, NOT a cheap investment BTW. Just stay away from the porn and spam e-mails you'll be fine. Easier said than done for some people 😀

If you have the money to spend on a really top of the line lappie (or if your parents do 😀) I'd recommend this one:

http://shop.lenovo.com/SEUILibrary/...-category-id=FB7AF02917DF464B80B47A578BC9DD24

I did A LOT of research to find the best, most durable, lightest (cause I'll be carrying it to class every day) and most reliable laptop there is, and by and large all reviews pointed to this laptop. Yes, it's expensive, but it's also supposed to be really awesome.

On the other hand, I was specifically looking for the LIGHTEST full-feature computer out there. If weight isn't a concern, then you can go nuts with all kinds of cool extras and probably spend much less money.

This have a Blu-Ray player?

haha yeah dude.. you want Mayo, you better kill step 1.

also, i was browsing the step 1 thread and when people report something like 251/99 for a score, is the 2nd number a percentile?
You don't get a percentile with your Step 1. They don't want to encourage neuroticism--in their mind, just passing should be enough. 🙄

or lots and lots of music, tv shows, and movies...

Hello LET.
That seems awesome, but I think I am leaning towards using the $2000 appropriated by MSSM to buy both a laptop and desktop. I wish I had 3000 so I could buy a tricked out laptop and desktop.

I don't see how I could possibly use a TB (may be if I had a few HD videos)

I realized that shortly after plugging it into the enclosure.

I'll find something to do with it!

As Macs get a larger market share, *nix-based viruses will become far more common. It's only a matter of time.

The processor in your machine is 32-bit. 64-bit means it can handle more stuff at once.👍

oh.. and waht is vista?

This have a Blu-Ray player?

Hmmm I don't think it's an option for such a teeny laptop, but maybe one of the other ones? The thinkpad computers all have great reviews, so if you dont necessarily want a thin and light laptop, there are definitely others that are much more tricked out.

And Anotherface: I actually would have done the same, but I already have another perfectly good laptop (a mac) that I'll use as a makeshift desktop at home. This way I'll have a laptop for work and one for fun. Plus I don't like running Windows on my mac, so this way I'll have the best of both worlds!

What is the point of having 2 computers? I never understood this... My roommate does this, and I never found the benefit...

Unfortunate... Blu-Ray HPs (top of the line) run about $1400, which is an AMAZING deal (remember 4 years ago when OK laptops were $2000?). Looks like I'll be getting one of those with 7 in July/August........

EDIT: My roommate first year had a mac (the one who replaced his hard drive 3x). He now uses a Dell with warranty coverage and loves it 😀

just built the dell i want.. i put in like EVERYTHING! and it came to just under $1700 no including taxes, s&h.. so not too bad i guess.

And to think the one I use now was like $2300 and was crappy in August 2005 :scared: compared to some others...

I want a laptop that is light and durable (portable) and a desktop with great functionality. Another reason that I want a laptop and a desktop is that I quickly become accustomed to using certain spaces for sleep, studying, and eating. This holds true for my PC too: if I start using the pc for entertainment purposes then I find it extremely difficult to do work on the pc. So I will make it easier for myself to stay off aim, fb, and SDN by using my laptop for studying, watching, lectures, and taking notes.

that makes a lot of sense.. lol
i have always been one of those people with only one computer, but part of it is that i prefer taking notes in notebooks. writing things down helps me remember stuff 🙂

When I had a dell I went through 3 hard drives, 3 cd-rom drives, a motherboard, two wireless cards, and a keyboard.

Then clearly you are missing all of the features you don't know you want yet!:meanie:

I congratulate you on your self-restraint and hope that I may one day aspire to do the same!👍

nope. that's abt what mine's gonna be. 😍 dell.
yay!! ombd im glad we're in it together. I want the studio 15 laptop in spring green 🙂 with just about all the best harddrive, memory, blu ray stuff LOL

I was marveling at how "cheap" they are compared to the olden days.. a "good" desktop used to cost 2k... and good was relative to the times. Now they've got an insane amount of speed, memory, etc at cheaper and portable.

Interesting... my old laptop is functional as a desktop of sorts, but I cannot use the internet on it... Maybe that is a good thing...

I'm going for the inspiron collection cause I love it... a cheaper base, but I can upgrade city plus it has the vista bonus (xp that is ready for vista if u want it). external hardrive for backup, everything in flamingo pink 🙂

hehe excellent. i am def getting that blu ray player since you seem to be able to record DVDs as well.. when do you think youre gonna get it? I am waiting for one of those nice discounts, like instant $500 off or soemthing lol

I prefer XP, and so does UMC's tech dept. plus I'm gonna go with a 3yr warranty and accident forgiveness and such, since i'll be practically LIVING on that computer.

I'm waiting for discounts too!! ha! and my easter money. I'd like to order in late april-may ish

I'm gonna keep my current laptop for a while, at least until I get used to the 15 inch screen (i have a 17+ now). I'm downgrading since i'll be carrying it everywhere.

Avoid Vista like the plague! It's a bloated ram-hog with no real increased capacity for punishment above XP. Also, many machines advertised as Vista-upgrade-capable fall far short of that capacity.
