I don't think I could ever get down into the 170's. I am assuming you are focusing on all cardiovascular work (outdoors...biking, swimming, running). After you lean up completely are you going to bulk up and then cut?
Yeah, I rarely lift weights. BUT--I do push my lactate threshold a lot more often than you'd think during my cardio sessions. Meaning the pace is really fast (swimming/running), or the resistance is really high (cycling hills). So I think that is giving me some maintenance and kinda keeping me from thinning out. Well that, and I eat A LOT!
I was just planning on leaning out...I already got a somewhat stalky build (i think its my pac islander heritage); then when med school starts, I'd just gain all the weight back! 🙁 But ideally, IF i could continue with my hobby of triathlons, I would--since it's a great way to stay fit.
what are you weighing these days? you're trying to GAIN weight, arent you????
Congratulations! Also, if you've got a <blah /> tag, you don't need a closing tag.👍
lol i had no idea! ill remember that for next time. I knew the brag mode didnt set in correctly =/

Actually my signature is a bit misleading. I do have long marathon workouts b/c I am definitely trying to lose ALOT of weight, but I also push myself in the weight room. It is dang near impossible to lose weight and gain lean muscle at the same time.

Since I am not eating to bulk up I am not building more muscle. However, I am getting stronger. And since I am a spinning maniac I am burning calories like crazy (did a two a day yesterday...arms in the morning followed by spinning....then another spinning class in the afternoon).

Once I am down to around 180 - 190 I will go through a true bulking phase and then cut. But I have a long way to go before I get there!

So far, since getting out of my post-athletics rut (read: gross weight gain due to bad habits) I have lost approx. 100lbs (over past 1.75 years). So now I am down to about 240...with a long way to go.

I will definitely be maintaining my workout schedule in med school (I'll just have to sacrifice)

anyways...enough with the rambling...but yeah that's where I am 😳

yeah...it is a weird line up! However, no one thought Jay-Z and Linkin Park could ever make a song together....so I am kind of hoping they try and combine genre's on stage

I have precious little idea about anything that came before this, so I'll just keep this bit:

I need... to resurrect my workout schedule. I keep thinking "I need to do pushups," but then think "oh, but, not today because I have to do ______________ and I'll be too tired."

Bad Myuu. Bad, bad Myuu.

Holy crap! Congratulations! That's awesome!

... Can you train my boyfriend? He's about where you are now, I think, maybe more like 220? He's actually doing okay on his own, considering how busy he is, and I'm glad that he's taking baby steps that are sustainable instead of jumping onto some fad diet that he'll give up on eventually.

I actually need to gain a little weight (five pounds would be nice), but I'm giving up because it's not going to happen without some serious overhauling of my habits. The pounds will come on their own someday, I'm sure! And for now, it's great financially! I'm cheap to feed because I don't eat a lot. 😀

I was doing ok when everyone in this thread was talking about how much exercising they were doing.

GET BACK TO WORK, PEOPLE! I'M DEPENDING ON YOU! PEER PRESSURE IT UP!!!

why is it everytime you post something, i have to use google, fail miserably, then come back and ask you what you meant??? 🙁

Because my vocabulary is replete with references to cult classics and not those perfectly ordinary metaphors and turns of phrase that perfectly ordinary humans use.

This shows up a lot more in the things I post online, for some reason.

One comment and one question... First and foremost; awesome work! 100lbs. in 1.75 yrs.! Keep up the good work.:highfive:

Second, have any advice for someone who is trying to do the true bulking and cut stage? I feel as though I have reached a plateau in my routine.

Y'know, editing an LOR written for yourself feels really, really weird. It's weird reading something this flattering about myself, and it's weird being critical about something someone wrote about you that's this nice!

Thanks Lyss. The support I've gotten has been pretty awesome and it is always nice when you receive comments here and there from friends.

I am pretty happy of course with my results, but even more so with my drive.

But what will you eat?! 'Baked' Chicken?!

If it is breaded and "baked" in oil, sure!:laugh::laugh:

Actually, I mostly eat boiled chicken. It's probably not the chicken that gets me--it's the biscuits and mashed potatoes.

yeah for me it was all about lifestyle change...Because I was so heavily involved in sports my poor eating habits, which I developed from my family, never really resulted in me looking like fat albert. However, once I stopped I ballooned in weight.

So when I decided to do something about my weight issue I felt it was better for me to engage in a complete lifestyle change, rather than depend on some crazy diet one cannot maintain the rest of his/her life. Now I eat alot of lean foods with the right balance of good carbs, fats (mostly good fats from almonds, avocados, fish oils in fish, etc...), and proteins. And occasionaly on the weekend I allow myself to have a cheat meal. That cheat meal definitely curbs my craving and prevents me from jumping back off the deep end.

A plateau in the bulk or the cut part?

btw, nerdy girls are adorably irresistible. . .for the most part 😉

How do you boil chicken? I never attempted it because I am not sure how long to boil it for. I want to buy a pressure cooker when I get into residency.

I JUST RECENTLY learned how to boil cook chicken in these past two months! The oven went out at my house so i couldnt use it. My older bro is a chef so he said throw some chicken broth in a sauce pan, heat it to a low simmer, then place the chicken in the pan, put a lid on it, and let it cook for 45 minutes! it tastes wonderful.

What's up 09medstudent13:

Thanks for the support!

Before I ask you about caloric intake can you post your current lifting routine.
Do you focus primarily on isolated, single muscle movement?

Do you ever incorporate compound movements that require input from more than one muscle group?

How often do you modify your workout and how many sets/reps do you complete?

Yowza, I just read the last two pages and it's all about getting fit, fit, fit. I like that. I am very impressed with rice's story because, well, 100lbs in a bit less than 2 years is... wow. I remember when I first met you when I was starting out at Penn (the first night at Lucy's I think, a year and half ago) and I kind of remember you being a lot bigger than you are now. That is really impressive. It makes me feel like a giant slacker even though I don't have that much more weight to lose 🙁 You should feel the same!!

Myself, I've always been hovering in this weight range. Senior year of HS, I peaked out at 155, ideal playing weight for varsity soccer and track (I did 200's and 400's, but I wasn't that fast). Freshman year of college, I peaked at 165 (my freshman 10) just playing pickup ball and generally living a unhealthy lifestyle (late-nighters, late night fast food, drinking crappy beer at crappy frat parties, etc.). Turned that around my sophomore year when I started running since I just needed to have something to get my competitive juices flowing (didn't play any varsity sports in college). Even though it was slow going at first (my first marathon was 4.5 hours) Nothing like a marathon or two to keep you in shape 😀

Now I tip the scales at anywhere from 148-150 today. I don't think I can force myself to lose any more weight, at least in a way that's healthy, even though I probably have single digit body fat % by now.. and I run 30-40 miles and do a 2-3 hour weightlifting session each week (gotta keep my bone density up).

Plan for med school is to bring that mileage # down to 20-25 miles a week and lift more frequently. Nice thing about lifting is that as you gain more, your metabolism gets higher (more muscles have higher caloric demands). So if I get fat in med school... I only got myself to blame.

I just drooled. That sounds pretty awesome, and easy to boot. Nice tip!

oshi--

That was a costume party! I am naturally ambitious!

Besides, I got outnerded by a fencer dressed as a very accurate Dread Pirate Roberts.😱

I was SO sick last night.

finally got to work a few min ago. forums aren't openin on my work comp but are on my phone. weird!

I hope you're feeling better.🙁

To this day, I'm convinced one of the reasons I did bad on that test was bc I found out about VTech less than an hour before the test started.

This is also one of the days when I remember that I'm so glad I transferred.🙁

Morning guys 🙂

Who else is excited about the NBA Playoffs? 😀

Saw that Garnett might be out for the postseason.. Cleveland has pretty much a clear path to the finals!

I dunno about the Lakers, but I think they're good enough to make it through as well. But they have a lot more to contend with than the Cavs will.

Go Cavs!😀

Garnett is out, so I think the Cavs will breeze to the finals (and win it!)

I said that already 😛

Spurs also, are too old and rickety to make it all the way to the end, IMO. Mason's already been running on fumes, and Duncan's not what he used to be. So I'll be surprised to see them go all the way.
