Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Are you rich, by any chance?

I'm definitely not wealthy....My parents have done well for themselves though. I grew up in Ladera Heights (a suburb of Los Angeles) and have been blessed with a myriad of opportunities not normally afforded to many afr. amer. kids (and I am soooooooooo thankful for it).

But I, for the most part, support myself. I am willing to sacrifice my ability to do certain things and go certain places just so I can purchase quality food. I shop at Whole Foods and Trader Joes mainly...and sometimes at the normal grocery stores.

I've been doing ok with my workout, 3-4x/week on average.

Boiled chicken doesn't sound very appetizing :scared:

Greatest rapper alive? I don't know about that. I would think Biggie or Tupac?

He's an ok rapper too though. 2001 was a great album.

Btw, my prediction for the NBA Finals: Cavs-Lakers, Cavs in 6.

AZN...boiled chicken is actually amazing. Alot of dishes in African and carribean countries consist of a boiled/simmer chicken in spices....dude it is awesome

hahaha i esp. liked the ending comment..."and sometimes at the normal grocery stores"👍

lol  i can corroborate his claim though. I've seen him at "normal grocery stores" in the past.

I mean like at Ralphs, Pavillions...the places that are not overpriced.

Most things at TJ's are pretty reasonable as well

Trader Joe's is awesome! I love that place. And their prices are often lower than my "normal" grocery store's prices.

They have great cheap wine too. And I love their penguin gummis.

My print spooler went on the blink again, and I fixed it all by myself! 👍

I'm a big girl now...

Rich and poor are relative terms. 80% of us come from the upper quintile income bracket (according to AAMC stats).

wait...pianola, do you mean you havent received info about loans and stuff or they just gave you a terribly crappy package?

No, I haven't gotten any info at all. 🙁

Mississippi is the most obese state in the nation.

Probably why we have VERY few health food stores

Good to know. I would suspect Florida isn't too far behind.

Heh, I think Houston is the most obese city in the nation (if I remember correctly from the Baylor interview day. 😛

Hurray for obesity!

Oh and talking about it all being rich and poor all being relative, Mr. Nola's mother has a friend who works at OSU in fammed and makes $60K/year.

...

I guess loans were a lot smaller way back in the day.

::fathoming paying of $200K+ in loans on a $60K salary::

-$2000 net family income. But I still make it rain

Hey I'm just saying what you might call "rich" isn't necessarily what someone else would call "rich".

Mr. Nola's living expenses this year are due to be under $8000.

I have to go to a seminar in a few minutes.

I feel the very pressing desire to postpad.

In other news, I had an excellent morning with Mr. Nola. 😍😍😍

Well here goes divulging much about me, forgive the narcissism.

I'll be the first to admit that I have to get myself on a consistent and wisely detailed food plan. I currently try to eat healthy; with a balanced meal, but far too often I give in to high carb (primarily sugar-rich) meals.

My current routine is a four day rotation.... Day one is focused on chest and triceps alternating weight lifting. I start with a compound set of dumbbell chest press and butterflies. Usually 75lb for the press and 55lb for the butterfly. Next is a close-locked triceps pull down, which I pyramid (10, 8, 6, 6, 8, 10 reps) with 120, 130 and 140lbs. The second series is a declined chest press with 75lb. dumbbells; 3 sets of 10 reps; and behind the head triceps lifts with a 75lb. dumbbell. The last series involves isolated straight chest presses and butterflies with the previously mentioned weights and isolated triceps presses with 30lbs. dumbbells.

Day two focuses on back and bicep; alternating the two muscle groups. The back exercises are opposite knee and hand on bench and raising a 70lb. dumbbell to my check, reverse butterfly with 40lb. dumbbells and some sort of pull up (solely body weight). The bicep exercises are combined arm curls with 70lb. + bar, isolated arm curls with 45s, and hammer curls with 40s.

Day 3 is shoulders and legs. For legs I do, squats, calf raises and shin raises. For shoulders I do a duel press with a machine where I alternate my grip both lateral and perpendicular to my shoulders, a routine of lateral lifts and straight lifts and isolated military press with 60s.

On days 1-3 I also do an abdominal routine and cardio. I start each day with 10-15 min on a stationary bike to warm up. Mid weight routine I do 2000m on a rowing machine and to close the workouts I do 15 minutes of stairs @ 100 stairs/minute.

Day four is solely cardio and abdominals as mentioned previously.

Before I give my input I do want to say that drizz and SDN2013 are pretty knowledgable about lifting...I'd say even more so than me.

How often do you switch up your routine?
Muscle confusion is one of the key elements to continued growth. You know your body becomes acclimated to certain movements combined with a certain number of sets and reps. You have a pretty solid routine, but it would do you some good to swtich up your routine to incorporate other movements that target the same muscle groups.

For example: Other chest excercises you can do: Dips (leaning forward so as to stimulate your pecs more than your triceps), cable cross overs (form is really important for this exercise), dumbell pullovers, push ups...a must...you can modify your hand positions,

You can also add more compound movements to your routine like deadlifts (all diff kinds...regular, stiff legged dead lifts, romanian deadlifts, etc...), power cleans, and hang cleans. Also keep up the work with squats

Plyometrics: have you ever tried plyometrics? That helps to increase explosiveness during lifting.

Also...just curious to know if at least on your last set of every exercise you try to push your set till you reach complete failure.

Lastly food intake: You know that when you are in a bulk phase your caloric intake must be approx 2x to 2.5 as high as normal...Obviously you want to maintain a clean diet rich in proteins (whey, albumin, casein), carbs (good carbs from sources like brown rice, sweet potatoes, etc...), and fats.

And you do eat something before you lift, right? Nothing heavy of course...more like a banana, some type of grain, etc

Side note: On day one is there any reason why you start focusing on triceps before you finish up with your chest

How often do you switch up your routine? Definitely something I do not put into proper practice.

Plyometrics: have you ever tried plyometrics? That helps to increase explosiveness during lifting. I do not, but something I surely would like to start.

Also...just curious to know if at least on your last set of every exercise you try to push your set till you reach complete failure. Yes, I alway end with a set to exhaustion.

And you do eat something before you lift, right? Nothing heavy of course...more like a banana, some type of grain, etc Try to whenever possible, usually going right after work.

Side note: On day one is there any reason why you start focusing on triceps before you finish up with your chest I like to alternate between the muscle groups of the day; as to not burn up all my energy on one before I get to the other.

Thanks for the advice Rice; I will employ much of this. I think my biggest problem is that I've let myself fall into a rut, while I go through the motions, I'm not pushing myself enough.
