Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Hopefully washu thinks I'm qualified enough to pull me off the waitlist, but I'm not banking on it. Was lucky enough to get an interview there since A) My GPA is way below their avg, and B) My MCAT is only slightly above their avg

Don't wait. You mean business. If you can, fly to Houston and meet with them in person. (And explore the city a bit more)

Do you feel that your meeting with the fin aid people made a big difference?

Of course in my case june fin aid packets has the added bonus (for them) of me having pretty much no leverage...

I'm not expecting to get off that waitlist because:
1. my mcat is way below their average 2. my gpa is lower than their average

:xf:. maybe it'll come through for ya. IS tuition at least?

Well IS tuition in Florida is actually worse than IS tuition at Baylor. Significantly worse.

But there are a bunch of "extras" that need to be factored in. Baylor has some ridiculously whopping high # of fees for one. For another, the cost of living is quite a bit higher than you'll see here.

It's a complicated mess that I'm still sorting through, I guess.

You aren't going anywhere but straight to the top of your class!

So am I!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

If you rated excellent in all categories, why did they feel you wouldn't be successful? 😕

I was rated excellent for research, clinical/volunteer, leadership, personal statement, LOR (the guy I spoke to wrote my LOR), but I was rated low for academics (the GPA portion).

UW-Madison is getting more and more competitive though, maybe the up and coming stats school? J/K I <3 UW but I've lived in madison for half my life, time to gtfo.

You haven't gotten a finaid package from Baylor yet, right pianola?

Well...I didn't get any finaid from them if that's what you mean, haha.

Sorry, I started the whole depressing finaid discusion. Guilty 🙁

I'm not expecting to get off that waitlist because:
1. my mcat is way below their average 2. my gpa is lower than their average

I hope we both get off and hang out with ONOY and Myuu and quirks 🙂 :luck:

On the FinAid topic, I'm actually really concerned that Pitt will just offer me 100% loans and I'll have to take out $200K+ in loans over 4 years. I'm not sure when I'll find out about my FinAid package, but it doesn't matter that much I guess because it is my only acceptance. I know it's a great school, but... $$$.

Lol, you have some sort of obsession with planes, don't you riceman?

and shaving does suck, which is why I've been sporting the 5 O'clock shadow look for most of this semester.

I shave (with an electric razor) maybe every 3-4 days. My problem is I can't grow enough facial hair for a moustache/goatee/beard, so I have no choice but to go for the clean-shaven look.

Oh yea, yesterday I spoke to a wisconsin adcom and apparently I was rated excellent in all categories but they felt I may not be successful academically. I actually politely nodded, didn't know what to say lol.

What? Really? My GPA is definitely below average at UW, and it's lower than yours. I wouldn't know what to say either if I was in your shoes. That is confusing as hell. Oddly, I think it might be more competitive post-interview for IS than it is OOS.

Huh...and it didn't help you?! My state school gave me ~80% off tuition and my parents make a good amount of money (middle class)...I always thought it was thanks to my siblings

That's still a great deal you got there, congrats! 👍 Are you going to take them up on that, though? I'm hoping I can get a bone or two now, because I have an older brother in law school and a kid brother in undergrad now.. didn't think of the sibling angle.

It's cause you're a pretty young thang.
P.Y.T.

I'm still waiting to hear from UF. Which was my other top choice. But heck I might take my last choice school for an extra $20K per year.

My question for you is, is it like this: You HATE UF and wouldn't want to go there if you could help it, or is it more of you just don't like UF as much as you do all of the other schools you've been accepted at, but you do like it? There's a huge difference there IMO.

Do what Az did, confront the financial aid people and see if they can't be persuaded to see your side of the deal. I mean, sounds like it worked out for him, and you don't have anything to lose at this point.

lol I'm hoping MCW will offer me 100% loans, gotta wait till june grrr

You are non-trad though right?

My interview went great, but it doesn't really count for anything, I recall someone on interview day telling us unless something catastrophic or miraculous occurs, it's worth less than a personal statement.

EDIT: Second top!? Wow. At least SDN loves me. Haha.

I don't dislike UF at all. I don't know how I feel about UF to be honest. I don't particularly feel like staying, though.

I was offered a scholarship elsewhere. I'm not crazy about the place that offered me the scholarship, though.

I do...i can tell you all about the major airlines and what type of aircraft they fly
I've had an interest in airplanes for as long as I can remember

It's only for the first year...but yeah, I think I'm taking it (like 95% sure). I'm still waiting on my waitlist schools though.
Your older brother won't help you but you're younger one will 👍👍👍

yeah...that's a bummer...I'm not exactly in your shoes but I am most likely going to turn down offers as well.

Sort of but not really. I did a post-bac right out of undergrad since I decided to go with medicine rather than BME during my senior year. So I'm not really non-trad but I am certainly not as traditional as the traditional applicant.

You're right, I remember now - they said that the interview is basically another LOR. At the time I thought that would be to my disadvantage because of my lower GPA, but seems like it all worked out.

I do remember a M1 telling me about some guy who interviewed on the same day as him, referring to Dean McBride as "that public health guy", and that he hasn't seen him since.

Yeah, it's tough trying to balance financial constraints against where you think you'd be happy for 4 years 😳

 My dad would love you.

Mine too. That reminds me, his birthday is coming up. I might get him a model airplane set this year. Do they sell those in retail stores?

Commercial model airplane sets? They do but they are not in your everyday all purpose store. They are in specialty stores and they are usually REALLY expensive

Oh, gotcha. I thought UF was the scholarship school. I guess it's just a matter of deciding how MUCH more you'd be willing to spend to not go to that scholarship school. That is quite a predicament you have there. Maybe you can work things out with Baylor. For some reason, I thought Baylor was supposed to be one of the cheapest med schools to go to!!

Ah, a transportation fiend, eh? I'm a car/road person myself, particularly late 60's, early 70's muscle cars. I blame my Detroit heritage for that though.

Welcome to the panic:scared:.

🙂 I'm just saying I'm hoping for a little need-based help. Heaven knows my family has no money to put toward my education.

No kidding, I've said this 100's of times already but I'm really hoping Case throws me a bone here!

Patrick McBride? I took a public health class last spring in anticipation of upcoming interviews and he was the lecturer for one of the classes.

Like several hundred? :scared: Maybe my brother can go halfsies with me...

I always thought Baylor was ridiculously cheap too!

When i fly I deliberately pick certain flight times that correspond to the type of equipment used b/c different aircraft have different ammenities.

I fly Continental as much as possible. And I know that on Continental all of their aircraft from their boeing 737-800 on up (all the way to boeing 777) have TV screens; however, not all of those aircraft have personal TV screens. The Boeing 737-800, 737-900, and Boeing 757-300 have drop down screens every 3 or 4 rows. So on those aircraft you cannot choose your own movie like you can on the other continental aircraft that offer in flight entertainment.

...I love you.

Awwww...

You're a little emotional today?

I feel it's best to be upfront about these things.

Haha, but what does your gf say?? 😱

Yeah. False advertising? I mean if you're a TX resident it's all nice and hunky dory.

I guess Baylor forgot that I also live in the South and that Southerners do not expect to pay Northern prices for education.:laugh::laugh:

:highfive: We should all get off that wait list and bring down Wash U's insane GPA average! My GPA is well below like... every school's average! It's a miracle any school looked past the cumulative number to realize that I'm actually not an idiot to have even bothered applying.

Speaking of depressing financial aid, it's actually going to cost me quite a bit to attend SUNY Downstate. 😱 It'll be 20K better once I'm a NY resident, but for this year they're budgeting that my COA will be about $61,991 (minus the under $3000 they think I can pay on my own, which admittedly I can if I use up my current savings) and they're offering me $42,722 in loans... which less than I need? 😕 Basically they're only covering my tuition and a tiny bit extra... Well crap. Looks like I will be living with my brother! I don't want to take out extra money on my own

here's an example:

McDonnell Douglas
MD-80
Alaska Airlines
Resin Model
Price: $179.00
$17.90 s/h in continental US

Scale: 1/100 W/S: 13" Length: 17 1/2"

Was your EFC supposed to cover the difference?

Thanks rice, I'll look into it some more 👍
