Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
Yeah, I can't see myself living in a big city like that!
Same here... I have set my sights for residency in the academic but small city areas so that I can hopefully spend my 5 years residency +1 year of fellowship in a smallish town, so that I can see how well I can adjust to it...
$650!! Geez! Wish I had that kind of disposable income...yeesh.
Seriously...
:ninja: I definitely don't love NYC as much as you all do. Don't get me wrong, it's pretty awesome, but just not quite me.

No offense, and WashU is an awesome school and all, but St. Louis has gotta be one of the worst cities I have visited... I would take NYC over STL anyday...😳

Haha, I meant it in all sincerity. Just found that picture to be oddly well-fitting. I'm glad I'll be here for another 4 years!! Though admittedly, unless you're from here, it is indeed very odd for you to love it.

I think NYC is a little too big for me to handle, personally. Baltimore is nice and manageable. Plus, Honfest is coming up!!!

I like it when the people are nice and friendly. That is the reason I loved Pittsburgh also because the people in downtown saw me walking around with my giant garment bag looking like a deer caught in headlights, and asked if I needed directions and helped me out... in almost any other place, I would have been mugged or even worse...

For Baltimore, however, I only saw what was in the vicinity of UMD, so that is what my impression of all of Baltimore is...

Oh and what is honfest?

Congrats!

Did you meet ar2388 there? She was at the graduation also!
Need access does not take too long since most of the stuff is the same as FAFSA, there are just a few additional questions.

Thanks funky! Yeah I didn't see ar2388 directly. Honestly, it was a very short trip to NY and there was a lot of moving-my-sister-outness.

Oh that reminds me, my driving skills in NYC have improved by leaps and bounds! I think I'm a pro!!! I'm so proud 😀

HaHa when non-NYers drive with me to NYC they are terrified

I. Would. Never. Drive. In. NY.

I am not suicidal. I may get a little angsty and depressed at times but I am NOT suicidal. 😱

Subway ftw.

When I sang at Carnegie Hall, I was forever a NYC girl 😍

(Years of watching Sex&TheCity didn't hurt either )

What did you sing at Carnegie Hall for?

Our benches say it all!!

EDIT: I found this one more fitting

Definitely trying too hard 😀

I think it may have been because my interview was right after finals, and I just wanted to go home and sleep. Plus I was burnt out since it was my 13th? interview, and I needed a break. Now that I think about it, it wasn't a bad place, and I will apply for residency, but I am not too much of a fan of all the hustle and bustle... plus seeing the cars lined up with not a single space availible, and how scary the people drove there gave me a negative impression.

Come to think about it, I went to NYC right after coming back from New Hampshire, so it was just too much on the extremes, since there were like 10 cars on the road at any one time in NH, while in NYC it was too busy... I think NYC is one of those "I'd love to go for a visit, but I would not like to live there" deals for me.

Fair enough. Yeah, it's kind of a culture shock when you come here for the first time.

leaving to go get my teeth whitened.

$650 worth of pure pain 😱

Damn, that's pretty expensive. Those teeth better be mirrors when you get back!

I'm the only one in my family who's brave enough to drive in the city now. My dad's not as good as he used to be, and he tries to overcompensate through sheer audacity, so it's always a little scary. My mom and brother don't even bother 😛

No way could I live there

Where I'm going is a "big city" to me. I'm going to have to do a lot of praying about where to apply for fellowships due to this haha.

Wikipedia said:
ackson is the capital and the most populous city of the U.S. state of Mississippi. The 2000 census recorded Jackson's population at 184,256, but according to July 1, 2006 estimates, the city's population was 176,614 and its five-county metropolitan area had a population of 529,456.

That is a good average sized city👍

Subway ftw.

Haha, it's not THAT bad. I've been driving here for 7 years and the only accident I was ever involved in was in a suburb of Queens 🙂

Speaking of subways, Myuu, I don't know if you use the DC subway system but it is sucktastic.

It is just totally amazingly sucktastic. Very clean, but the fares are crazy.

I don't know who thought it was a great idea to lock you into the subway if you haven't paid the correct fare by the time you get off.

Depending on what side of the streets you were on near UMB, you may or may not have gotten an accurate picture of Baltimore's population :meanie:

Honfest is a neighborhood festival in Baltimore - Hampden in all of its quirky glory. http://www.honfest.net/
I'm off to a meeting so I can't elaborate on its wonderfulness.

OK, I guess my reflexes just aren't that fast. I drive in Florida-land where cars are at least one carlength away from you at any given moment. 😀

 No offense taken. I would prefer NYC over St Louis in terms of location, but I loved Wash U in and of itself.

DC's actually been one of my favorite places in the US so far. But I have to say, after having been to Istanbul, I understand why my Turkish boyfriend is so apathetic about US cities!

Yeah, I was on the sides closest to UMD, so I got a completely different view. Plus it was cloudy/raining, so there were not as many people outside.

Oh and hon fest sounds... interesting????

When I drive in Florida I have to watch out for the people that just walk across the street at any moment 😱

Although, to be fair, I have the same concern in NYC. Driving in NYC is definitely a learned skill. I don't do it very often and I've never been in an accident :xf: ... but my parallel parking skills have improved 500%!!! I'm so 😎 I only drive to Bx and Midtown tho... I rarely drive anywhere else.

I'm looking forward to not having a car! I didn't have a car in Boston and it was okay... but I'm excited to have 24 hour subway access 👍 That makes it much easier to survive without a car.

You get used to it... LA is not as bad as NYC, but it is not too different, and once you get over your initial fears, it is not bad.

Oh and I am so jealous that you got to go to Istanbul...

I however must go to class🙁 In exactly 2 weeks 2 hours and 45 minutes, I will be done with undergrad! :soexcited: I cannot wait...

Bye everyone!

I desperately want to go to the West Coast and see LA!!! I wanna go soooooo bad!

If I wasn't accepted to Cornell or NYU, I'm pretty certain I would have been living in DC. I loooooved it & I hope I can go check it out some more on my off time.

Indeed

Azn - I sang at carnegie with a select group from my college chorale. John Rutter directed us 😍 😍

That's awesome! I wish my orchestra could have played there, that would have been sweet.

If I hadn't gotten into med school this year, the silver lining would have been that my orchestra is playing at Carnegie Hall in October 👍 Too bad I don't think I'll be able to keep it up during the beginning of school...therefore I'm giving up my seat in the orchestra

Quick meeting FTW!

Istanbul was Constantinople
Now it's Istanbul, not Constantinople
Been a long time gone, Constantinople
Now it's Turkish delight on a moonlit night

...haha.

Good day my loves :hello:

1. Is it weird that I am excited that y'all are all going to be out of work soon? 😀 And also sad bc that probably means y'all will be doing other things than SDN ? 🙁
2. After reading the past couple of pages I am now going to force my cousins to go with me to NYC this summer. They owe me trip - they are the ones who cancelled Cancun 😡

Morning Raaska!

So there will be a party in NYC and one in Austin? Sweet! 😀

NYC driving isn't really that bad, it's the parking rates that suck.

But I actually found somewhere to park free in Manhattan last August😱.

Haha, you make it sound like an ancient artifact

Midtown is pretty insane, but downtown is manageable. The trick is just knowing when the meters turn off 😉

How does the weekend of June 20th sound ??

yes it does! sounds good to me 😀

I'm down with that. That's the first weekend after I quit my job! 🙂

Ugh, I just spent 30 minutes on the phone with Sirius trying to cancel my subscription because they renewed it for 1 year without telling me.

I was checking my credit card balance and "WTF? Where did this $150 charge come from?!?"

I hate it when they do that...

Don't scheduel it around me, I'm not sure if I'll even be in NY this summer. I just want to know the date in case things work out.

Haha, I was throwing that date out for everyone 🙂 And keep it in mind 👍 OH and I might be heading out to Detroit sometime soon .....

I should just make SDN trips all summer

oOoOoH Hairspray is on 😀

Welcome back pianola!

I thought it was "The Sign" 😕

:hello: everyone! I have a feeling I'm going to be up late tonight, so thought I'd hang out with you guys 😀
It was..i think i was really really tired..im not used to normal hours, haha.

I am fashion challenged, so I have a question for you all. What color/ pattern tie goes best with a dark brown shirt?

Typical LA native.. :meanie:

Sorry your city tries too hard
:meanie:

I'd argue that they don't try hard enough!!

Ah Baltimore... UMB isn't the only representation of Baltimore as a whole. It's odd in that there are nice areas like Inner Harbor, Mount Vernon, Federal Hill, etc. but there are also ****holes like the area around East Baltimore, or across MLK from UMB, etc.

Grrr..my dad was just introduced to email..and he is now spamming my inbox hahaha...Hes definitely not getting my UNC email address.
