Class of 2013!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I haven't had a juice box in foreverrr...but I did have a box of Yoo-hoo not too many months ago 🙂

Yoo-hoo definitely makes the best chocolate milk IMO 👍 I tried ordering some at this place called Max Brenner in New York (anyone else been there?) and it sucked.

I get juice boxes bc I would take them with me to school sometimes (yes, I mean college) and if I would buy jugs.....I would drink too much in one day 😳 And juice is really not that great for you, so it was my way of limiting my juice intake

Note: I found that pic on the internet....that's not my home in the background or anything

I'm gonna use a sippy cup when I get to med school.

I'm gonna use a sippy cup when I get to med school.

Please do.

One of my friends brought one with him with his booze in it when we would go out. It was shaped like a hippo. Probably one of my highlights of the year.

I'm ready for a juice box and a nap 🙁

Nap time would be amazing! Instead I have "sneak off for hour long lunch and read" time. 😳

I love juice boxes. My bf's father has a mini fridge for drinks (soda and such) and there's lots of juice boxes! I was happy. 😀

yikes, don't know about that

here is mine 😀 got it off my loan entrance counseling yesterday:
Based on student loan debt of $135,000.00 to be repaid over 10 years at 6.8 percent interest, my estimated monthly payment is $1,553.58.
To support repayment of the debt, I should earn at least:
· $112.04 Hourly
· $19,419.81 Monthly
· $233,037.67 Annually

And I am more than likely will be doing peds 😛

I did this the other day and, well, see for yourself:

Based on student loan debt of $240,000.00 to be repaid over 10 years at 6.8 percent interest, my estimated monthly payment is $2,761.93.

To support repayment of the debt, I should earn at least:
# $199.18 Hourly
# $34,524.10 Monthly
# $414,289.19 Annually"
😱 😱 😱

Wait wait wait, why would you have to earn $34,000/month if your estimated payment is less than 1/10 of that? That seems a little ridiculous. I know owning a house/utilities/life itself is a huge expense, but my word.

Seriously?

I can't imagine my expenses increasing 12x as a doctor regardless of student loans. I make less than $34k/year now and am keeping my head above water perfectly fine while paying off undergrad expenses.

(My debt will be about the same as you, quirks)

I'm assuming the calculator assumes a much higher cost of living than I'm planning on. I make $28k a year right now and I'm comfortable, even with saving 20% of my income and living in an apartment that's a higher percentage of my monthly income than it should be. (I have no current debt and no car though).

So yeah, don't mind the calculator. But it still makes for a memorable "Wait, what? 😱" moment when you first see the numbers.

I really wish I knew someone who could seriously advise me about money. I always have random questions but I have no idea who can answer them for me. Like, would it make more sense for me to put some of my savings in a Roth IRA now (at most I'd put in 2K), as I can contribute this year but won't be able to again till I start making money as an Intern/Resident? Or does it make more sense to just spend that money and not take that amount out as loans?

I'd just spend the money unless the interest on the Roth IRA (I have no idea what it is) is fixed at a higher rate than your student loans. This comes from my limited financial knowledge...I feel like we were never sat down and told about this stuff. But spending it based on interest rates seems the most logical thing to do.

You don't have to pay it off in 10 years though, raaska..there are a lot of repayment plans. And you can get public health service $$ if you do peds in underserved areas.
I think I would really like that actually.....where you work and they give you a reduced income and they pay off your loans.
Raaska are you going to TCOM??

My uncle went there 🙂 He is chief of surgery now 👍
Yes I am 😀
And sweet!

I. want. pictures.

😱 Y'all just made me dizzy for a second

damn how do you manage to save that much money on a sub 30k income. i make 33 from my primary job and say a couple more from being a mcat tutor and like $5 from being a hooker and I have nothing in the bank 🙁

I kinda wanna buy an apartment/house, that would be a good investment

😆

Yeah, me too. Actually, I'm already in the hole even before I sign off on my loans. Oh well.

Well played sir 👍

Law enforcement officials said they have long been familiar with Mr. Von Brunn, who has claimed variously to be a member of Mensa, the high-I.Q. fraternity; to have been a P.T. boat captain in World WarII and to have been victimized by a court system run by Jews and black people

what?

Eeeeeeeeeeexactly. Interestingly, CNN is calling him a "neo-nazi." I think he's old enough to be a real one or at least a wannabe.🙁

I dunno. Rent = $875 (includes heat and hot water), Cable + Internet = $77 a month, Electricity = ~$40 a month, I save $400, and then spend $600 on whatever (food, books, taking care of my bird, presents for people, etc). I dipped into my savings a bit to go to Turkey (payed for Ticket and some random stuff like clothes and presents, but my bf was awesome and payed for most of my other expenses while in Turkey).

Applying to med school was pretty much payed for by the money I got for graduation (parents + relatives), and then for Christmas from my parents. And one of my older brothers pays my cell phone bill (he's been doing that since I was 14... 😳 Someday it's going to dawn on him that I'm not a dependent anymore). If I'd had to pay for med school applications myself, I think that would have wiped out my savings, but I'd still be about even.

I'm a very simple person. 😀 As long as I can afford the internet, I'm happy.

Some f*cker shot someone at the holocaust museum.😡🙁

😱 That's awful. 🙁

My sisters are 12 or 10 years older than me so I should have been an aunt years ago 🙁 my oldest sister is now trying as well and I think am more anxious than my mom 😳

hey all....which guys in here lifted weights ???
i just started lifting yesterday and i really liked it. I want to make macho man talk with other testosterone-filled muscle bound people now.

heyyyyyyyyy....what did you do? Details please:

workout regimen...sets? reps? pyramids? isolation? compound? etc....

protein afterward? protein before? what are you doing tomorrow?
😀

anyways...now that training is over for the day, I am heading off to the gym

Legs...ohhhhhh the pain (squats, lunges, leg presses, calf raises....ohhhhhh my)...and biceps...ehhhhh I am going to try and push myself

Thanks for all the good luck wishes. It is funny... at first when I got to the final, the proctor only brought 12 exams, so I at first did not get an exam and I was sitting and twiddling my thumbs until they got some more copies... oh well, Yay I am done with one final, but boo, no more Turkish🙁 The final was hard considering how little I studied, but eh, I do not care.

The idiot at the Holocaust museum himself deserves to be gassed in the chambers😡 How much more of a f******* can one become shooting someone at the holocaust museum?😡😡😡

Where is this loan calculator that you guys are all using?

Oh and I do not know anything about loans and stuff... When is one apparently supposed to learn about these kinds of things?

Time to study biostats... I am hungry though... my final drained all the energy out of me🙁

Interesting... everyone left right when I came on🙁

Fine, I'll leave also🙁

hey im about 30min from going to the gym too =)
what i did yesterday was very minimal in terms of beginning a weight training program. I just kinda did it because I hadn't been to the gym in a while and my upper body wasn't sore. That being said, there was no lifting plan, nor nutritional guideline I followed.
But my workout log was more or less as follows:
1) 15min stretch
2) 45min spin bike [self]
3) 45min spin bike [class]
4) 30min run (4miles)
5) 60min misc. upper body weight lifting
*I had one scoop of gatorade powder mixed w/ 5-6oz of water after the spin class. Continued drinking water regularly during the lifting activities. Showered and drove home and ate a small serving of plain yogurt w/ a spoonful of blackberry jam mixed in (approx 30min post workout).

today, im using my lil brothers protein mix (plus some gatorade powder) before I workout. I am currently on an empty stomach and well hydrated. I plan to:
1) 20min to change and stretch.
2) 15min running on treadmill for warmup (@8mph)
3) 45min of weight lifting (mostly legs?)
4) 45min of self-spin
5) 60min of spin class
6) bringing small bag of peanuts to eat after workout
7) **JACUZZI**

will do. I'm :soexcited:. My sister and her husband are getting ready to start trying for a baby!!!

Yay! Which reminds me, I found out a few weeks ago that I'm going to be an Aunty in November! 😀 My brother got married this January and I guess they started trying really quickly! I'm excited. First baby!

Don't forget your Turkish! I'm just starting. We can chat once I know how to do more than count, say random foods, and ask if there is or isn't any of said foods. 😀

The loan calculator is at the end of the entrance counseling you need to do for your loans.

And as for money... Well, going by the state of the US economy, one never learns these things.

Looks like a lot of us are going to be first time aunts...my sister had a scare a couple weeks ago and had a subchorionic bleed but things are going much better now 👍

I never got a calculator on my loans site -- I'm going through Direct Loans and hopefully I'll get approved because I really don't want to have to go through a third party lender...

wow...you must still be in your badass weightloss phase of your workouts

just one quick thing: don't stretch before you lift

grrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr 😡😡

my workout was shortened today b/c it closes at 7pm and got to the gym late since training ran long today 😡

ahhhh welll...will just have to make it up with a two-a-day tomorrow

on another note...I found out that so far I am only black male in my class today 😱😱😱😱

Sure thing, I would love to have a buddy to speak Turkish with😀

there's been some lengthy conception periods on this side of the family, but we're hoping she breaks the mold 🙂

I'd love to have a niece/nephew this upcoming summer or the next.

on another note...I found out that so far I am only black male in my class today 😱😱😱😱

you mean your med school class? that's crazy. sometimes being the only one of kind can be a good thing. chicks dig that

I'm pretty sure I won't have that problem

Being serious though, I don't think it'll stay that way. That just seems too weird that there would only be one person of any ethnicity in an entering class.

In one of my clubs I am the only guy... It is nice to be surrounded by beautiful women😎
