Class of 2014!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

This forum made possible through the generous support of SDN members, donors, and sponsors. Thank you.
I get to have beer at lab group meeting to drown my sorrows in.
dw...🙁 I did, I snuck out while peddie wasn't looking lol. The thing is-our mail center is notoriously slow so I wont know for sure if it is just them or if Emory is giving me the finger this time around for another week I think.
Either way-boo! Thanks for your thoughts though-it means a lot that you guys feel that way 🙂
(the internets is making me sappy)

aww 🙁

well, i'm still :xf:for you

yep, I still have (I think) 2 meetings left. I am just tired of all these pins and needles lol.
When do you hear back from your loves?

"march." that's all the info i have

i think columbia and cornell are early march and harvard is mid-march. not sure, though.

with my luck I will hear about Emory and Duke in march also.
I imagine by that time the butterflies in my tummy will become permanent lol

btws-I have no doubt you will get in. you are a superstar, come to think of it-this thread is filled with nothing but WIN in my opinion.

Ok guys I need your honest opinion - how bad is it if the ethanol plant that my dad has an investment in cannot get us this K-1 form until the third or fourth week of February? Our income taxes will not be considered complete until the form is received in late Feb. Am I running the risk of being considered "late" for financial aid purposes, or am I still good? How late is "late", as in risking missing out on financial aid? Ugh, I feel like I'm applying all over again. 🙁

thanks 😳

but i'm worried-- i feel like i did myself a big disservice at harvard and cornell by not writing post-interview update letters. i mean, i sent them today, but i'm assuming a decision was already made on my app a loooong time ago. alas.

I didn't think they did fin aid until later (march/april), just file right after you get it and I think you'll be cool. Obviously it'll differ between schools, but here they don't even look at need based aid until the late-spring/summer so everyone is eligible no matter how late they filed.

I feel your pain though, I had a crap load of my 1099s recalled until Feb 22nd.

So at the very latest you'll have things by the first week of March? I think you'll be fine since that's still before most schools start sending out financial packages (at least I'm pretty sure it's mid-March at the earliest but I don't have any of my handouts from interview days with me). I think when they talk about people "missing out" on financial aid because they applied too late, they're referring to people who are getting packages on/near May 15th or after that if they got off a waitlist late in the summer. I'm sure it also varies by school

I leave ye with this.

allz she has to do is submmitt that LOR to interfolio, I dont even need to get reaaaal close or NEthing. BTW, do you guyz think my GPAs bad? (I got a 2.5 but I started with a 2.0, so upward trend right??)

yeah I mean I figured it was Laker fans but I was just surprised to hear so many way out in Memphis

They are everywhere.

Alright 2014ers, important question here:

Who makes the best sub?

Those are non-rollers, yeah?

thanks 😳

I think those letters are a lot more helpful at bumping somebody off of a WL. I'm kinda skeptical that they have much impact right after an interview. I mean, presumably you just told the interviewer what you've been up to. Besides, if you give 'em all the good stuff pre-decision, you've got no ammo left if you get WLed.

yup. well, cornell lets a bunch of people in in december. so i'm pretty sure i won't get in there, but it claims to be non-rolling.

that's reassuring to hear. so (honestly) do you think it was pointless for me to send them at this point? i'm kind of feeling like it was. except that i thought it was just something you were supposed to do. oh well.

Lost my ammo for UChicago. Now I gotta call admissions and ask them what more I can do. Hopefully that in itself is some kind of ammo, even if it is BB pellets.

Columbia really likes people who like Columbia, according to mmmmcdowe, the Columbia insider.

I took that to mean that my letter before a decision could only help me.

Can't worry about saving bullets for later, IMO. That's like resting starters when you're in a playoff race.

You have to get to the playoffs first.

I mean, it's not pointless if you feel like there is some stuff you really need to tell them. I guess it's a lot harder for a non-rolling place because you don't know if they've already reviewed your file. There's always the possibility that they'll reevaluate with the update, too.

For rolling schools I think it's a lot easier to determine if sending a letter makes sense; if the situation is "no news means you haven't been reviewed," then it's safe to assume whatever you send will be included in the decision. I still worry about running out of ammo if you get WLed though, and seeming pushy and redundant.

Sorry for the rambling. I guess my final two cents is that you have to take it on a case-by-case basis. Is the school rolling? Is your update important/impressive? How long ago was the interview?

oh trust me, i wrote to columbia. it's the other two i'm worried about. since my interviews were so long ago (october 1 and 15) i feel like i should have written to them in like december. oh well.

I guess, but that's only if you're worried about being rejected. If I get a post-interview rejection I probably wasn't a good fit for the school.

yeah, this is why i hate non-rolling crap. i'm sure they tossed me into whatever pile i belonged in on like november 3rd, and just aren't bothering to tell me until next month.

Sorry to hijack the advice, but the story went for me that I interviewed at Pritzker, and I've heard they love when applicants show interest and love Pritzker. So I sent a letter of intent following my interview (about a week later). Two weeks later I got WLed. I had already sent an update letter and special LOR in order to get the interview in the first place.

Now my plan of action that I'm thinking about is: call admissions and ask what else they recommend that I submit, send another update letter, wait, send (another) letter of intent. Anything I'm missing or should omit??? 😕 Thanks you guys!

I feel ya. I haven't interviewed at a non-rolling place, but I can imagine that would be annoying, especially if they don't give you a specific date by which you'll hear something.

disagree. i don't think the schools i'm talking about have huge waitlists. they have to reject tons of qualified "good fits" just because of the sheer volume of applications and the fact that very few people that apply to those schools are outright unqualified. JMO.

That's why I felt the need to write a letter.

I wanted to make it very clear that we're meant for each other.

IMO:
Wait until there's likely to be some WL movement (late April/early May), and then send another LOI. Update them if you have anything to update with, and tell them you'll go if accepted (if that's the case).

Alrighty. I think I'll still call tomorrow. Then I'll hold out on sending in the reserves (update + additional letter of intent) until mid/late-April rolls around...

Yeah, if you're worried about getting rejected by all means send one. I just prefer to wait a while, unless I can pretty accurately gauge whether or not the school has made a decision on my file.

bender, if Pritzker doesn't show you love, where are you looking to go to med school in the fall?

Well, right now, I'm thinking Loyola or Pritzker. So if I get no love from Pritzker, I'd say 90% chance I'm at Loyola. I'm thinking I have a decent shot at getting off the WL at Pitt, but I think that WL placement has really weighed on me and so has the distance. So if I am fortunate enough to get into Pitt, I may be that category of applicant that Pitt really turned off because of the WL. Who knows though, really really pulling for Pritzker but Loyola impressed the hell out of me.

FYI, i just lol-ed at your "profile POOF!" mdapps thingy. hee hee.

I don't even know why I don't have it up. Not like I'm really worried about anonymity at this point. I think it's because I'm just sick of updating. Who knows... POOF!

Wow this thread is really kicking again.

Luckily I'm doing everything possible to avoid studying for my logic exam tomorrow so I'm keeping up.

Symbolic logic or regular? I mistakenly took regular when I wanted to take symbolic and it was the most pointless class ever.

Alright, I'm out for a bit. Nice catching up with you guys! I'm definitely going to be around more now that my neuroticism has returned 😉 See ya!

What's the difference? It's called intro to logic. We're doing a lot of asserted vs expressed, making the translation manual of statements and proofs of arguments.

I only used one from my mom, BB. And I got accepted, so...

ditto. i used pedie's mom for my letters. haven't gotten in anywhere yet though...

as long as the slope is positive you're golden!

so guys, i just realized that it's super cold in new york, and my suit probs won't keep me warm enough to get to the school w/o frostbite.

i was thinking i'd wear my dad's trenchcoat and an ushanka. i'd probably be able to take both off before i even saw my interviewer. still, too weird?

i don't wanna be cold
